I will take a hint from FutureWarrior and make an open letter of apology concerning my post. In the last 2 days I have posted more than I have posted in the past 6 weeks. The more I think about my original post, the more I regret saying anything about my fellow classmate. I also realize that it may have seemed that the original post was nothing more than arrogant bravado. Let me apologize to all those offended and assure you that all my posts were made with zero disrespect. I honestly could never have expected that my post would’ve made to a West Point company distro. Regardless, I realize I have earned nothing so far, and that I only have trials and challenges to come this summer. So, with as much humility as possible, I am sorry both to those offended by my arrogance and to the kid, who I think I’m going to apologize to on the hike. God Bless, and I hope to see you this summer.

(and to those I PM’ed, please reply. I really would hate for their to be any bad blood.)

I was on the future yuk class for a certain company distro. They had issues with you both, but with you it was really all your “huah” aspirations, rather than your derailing a classmate. Gossip is pretty normal here, so no one they didn’t care. As for your dreams, some hate people who think like that and they’d do anything to put you down for what for most people would be unrealistic goals. Others would really admire you, though. So, don’t worry too much about iit.

Homer, you gotta love how it’s all the future Yuks (and current Plebes, I might add) on this forum that are just having a grand old time criticizing 2011. Ironic, isn’t it, considering we’re the ones that are about to be Cows. Probably why Yuks are the most hated ones in the Corps…

Haha, yeah. These future yuks think they are going to give future plebes a hard time, yeah right. I guess they are just looking forward to having someone under them. Can’t blame them I guess, but they won’t be doing any hazing.

Has west Point really cracked down hard on the hazing? I have heard different stories about how the higher have really tightened the reins on the upperclassmen. Some people has even gone so far as to say that you could be seperated for yelling at plebes to harshly…

If I’m one of these “future yuks” you speak of, my intentions are more in the direction of living precariously through my plebe, and helping them have a year I didn’t have. I didn’t have too good of a plebe year ( 1st semester, anyway) and there are things I wish I had known. One thing I really don’t want is a plebe who already knows more than me. A prior service plebe would be detrimental. I want the opportunity to do good at something.

As for the fellows on the distro, the thread turned in the direction of making their plebes as rebellious as possible. This is an entirely different monster than hazing yuks. They probably could get away with making fun of a 8:?? miler a## hole, who thinks he’s hot stuff, though. A CLASSMATE could get away with that.

It still isn’t a yuk’s job to seek out this kid and give him a hard time. The CoC is there to make corrections and anyone else can just make spot corrections.

Hazing isn’t bad. The word hazing means something entirely different than from years before. Plebe life isn’t easy, but I don’t think it is what it once was.

Do they still make you do little rituals… Do football players recieve any special treatment… How does the student body feel toward football players overall…

“Rituals”, if I know what you’re talking about, yes.

Football players, lacrosse players, runners…corps squaders in general have the opportunity to get out of a lot. Their responsibilities and privileges are different enough from everyone else’s that the student body (corps) has a difficult time relating to them. This is normal at most colleges, where no one can really understand how most other people live their lives, but camraderie is pretty important here. I share common tasks with people in my class and company and I relate to them through this. Corps squaders can get out of these tasks, which makes them seem somewhat distant and detached. I don’t know how to appreciate them, because I don’t know how to know them. I’ve roomed with a corps squadder since September, so with him there is an exception for me. I know how his life works. For the rest, though. I have a difficult time.

Football players are only special among corps squadders in that they get to eat more during beast. After those seven weeks, they’re pretty much the same.

Corps squaders don’t do some things that the rest of us do. They also have a lot of other things on there plate that we don’t have. So, in the end I think it evens out. There is tension amongst the corps squaders and non-corps squaders sometimes. I think it mostly stems from the non-corps squaders who complain about how corps squaders have it easier. So, there is a little bit of a divide.

“Homer, you gotta love how it’s all the future Yuks (and current Plebes, I might add) on this forum that are just having a grand old time criticizing 2011. Ironic, isn’t it, considering we’re the ones that are about to be Cows. Probably why Yuks are the most hated ones in the Corps…”

marines4me: I have enjoyed reading your posts over the years and seeing them change as you have progressed from candidate to plebe to yuk and now future cow. Why do you believe that " Yuks are the most hated ones in the Corps"? I’m assuming you are including yourself in this group this year??

Well of course I include myself, Ann! I even annoyed myself at times! Yuks are basically the adolescents of the Corps. They have more privileges than Plebes, and more responsibility, but they (we) like to test our bounds. I was the same way last year when I was about to become a Yuk; I wanted to conquer the world. There’s a reason that the word “f—in” is almost always attached to the word “Yuk”. There’s also a reason that Yuks have the highest number of Brigade Boards and drinking incidents. They’re just naturally rebellious!

It’s really interesting this year to watch the transitions within each class. The current Yuks as a whole are becoming a little more angry, a little more willing to make corrections than they were at first. I’m going to be a Platoon Sergeant next year, and I can’t wait to meet my Platoon for the first time! It’s gonna be pretty awesome!

Voxist, I’m going to post this simply because I commented in your original thread.

First off, kudos on the apology. It takes guts and class. Well done, whether it was necessary or not (I’m making no judgement either way).

As you know, I didn’t attend West Point. However, having attended USNA I feel sufficiently comfortable in saying that by the time you begin Beast, no one is going to remember or care what they read on the internet. You will be judged solely and exclusively by your performance at Beast.

As already recommended by myself and others more closely associated with WP, you’ll have enough to worry about looking after yourself and the two guys to either side of you to worry about this. The same will go for the upperclassmen, who will have a hard enough time whipping you guys into shape and evaluating your performance to waste time remembering what some guy on the web said.

Did it make it into a WP distro? Big woop. Lots of other things do, too. Far worse things. This is nothing extraordinary.

Hang in there and keep getting ready for when you and the rest of your classmates begin YOUR challenge in a few weeks. As for the rest, forget it.

Good luck! :)

Note: If any WP alumni or cadets wish to correct me in my advice, please feel free. While I consider myself to have a certain entitlement to post in the USNA forum, I come here strictly as a humble visitor and only to offer advice within a narrow bandwidth that reaches across SA lines. If things are significantly different at the Point (no snide comments, please), then by all means set the record straight. Thanks.

marines4me: I appreciate the feedback. It has been great to be able to follow your path and see you grow. Your posts are always insightful and helpful to others - thanks for sharing. I look forward to hearing about your summer experiences and life as a Cow :).

Well see I didnt know if recruited ball players will be singled out and become an object of a non squaders anger… I was just wondering if larger individuals will be more likely to be singled out and "made an example of " due to some guy’s macho ego… You always here guys talk about how they pick the biggest dude and make and example to gain fear and respect from other people… Some of the people I have talked to say that “non-competition” students feel like football players, specifically linemen, fall under a category that is not the corps… Just seems like alot of segregation…

FWIW, I never saw such segregation during Plebe Summer, and I would be surprised if it occurred during Beast.

Everyone will have their moment in the detailer’s spotlight. Some will “volunteer” for more of it by screwing up, but I think the idea of certain types of people being singled out during that first summer is an exageration.

During the academic year, however, some singling out may occur if the upperclassmen think that a Plebe is using his position on a varsity team to skate.
