Opera at SMU?

I’ve always wanted to study Musical Theatre, but lately I feel as a Bass singer, studying Opera might be a good choice. Since a classical foundation is needed for any style, would majoring in Vocal Performance be a bad idea? I could take dance classes for electives, plus Opera Theatre classes are technically acting classes. Any opinions?

Family just saw the Met’s production of Faust last night, and we were commenting about the scarcity of basses today. If you’re truly a bass, you’re a rare breed! I would encourage you to develop your voice as fully as you can - and that would mean studying repertoire that challenges your unusual range. (classical repertoire) If you wish to segue back to musical theatre one day, you’ll do so with a trained voice and a more professional sound. Just my opinion. As for acting - I was most impressed with the full performances the singer/actors gave in the HD Faust. In fact, I believe that the director was a musical theatre director who was successful in communicating his unusual concept of this standard operatic work. Opera today demands committed actors as well as beautiful voices.

Best of luck to you in whatever you decide!

SMU has a great program for undergrads! If you are lookin Texas be sure to check out Rice, UT Austin, UNT, and Baylor.
