Operations Internship at Goldman Sachs

hey guys ,
i applied online for a summer internship with Goldman at the start of November, my status changed from 'application received ’ to ‘under review ’ about 2 -3 weeks ago. how long were your status’ ‘under review’ for ? thanks!

Hey Needmeajob,

Nice screen name!

I wouldn’t count on the online status update… from my experience interviewing with several firms, they hardly update their applications. For example, a interview that I was rejected for about a year ago still has “selected for interview” as its status.

GS should conduct first round interviews around US campus in January.

Good luck!!

thanks toblerone!

haha my screename is quite fitting ! ye i was thinking that the interviews were sum time this month. my situation is a little different though because i applied to GS in London and I go to college in New York. I did also apply to GS new York but it still says 'application received ’ there as compared to ‘under review’ in London. i’ll just wait and see i guess! I must say the online application was very easy to navigate, i found the HSBC one pretty poorly put together. It’s my first year applying for an internship so the experience of applying is good in itself. Thanks for your help! ill keeep you informed!

i had a 2nd round interview in boston at the beginning of december for a summer ops analyst position in either NYC or Jersey City. got a call about a week later saying i had made it through the initial post-interview screening and that final decisions on the remaining candidates would be made sometime in late january or early february. ended up having to take another offer that i already had to do consulting for a big 4, but might still pursue with goldman depending on whether i get an offer.

I interviewed for GS Ops in November and I was also “on hold” and didn’t hear back from them in months. I just assumed the worst and continued the interview process this semester.

However, two weeks ago I got a call and was given an offer. No second Interview. No additional questions. Apparently, they interview early and don’t make decisions until months later. So don’t be discouraged. You should be hearing from them now.

By the way, I accepted it over a Sales and Trading internship at a smaller bank. My philosophy is that you can’t assume whatever internship you accept will give you a full time offer. With that said, I wanted the Internship that would look best on my resume and get me the most interviews when I’m looking for a full time job. I personally believe GS Ops looks better than a S&T at a small bank. Maybe I’m wrong…but it’s too late now.

Anyone here working at the Jersey City office for Ops this summer? =)

^Ops really looks better than front office at a smaller firm?

libor, you just screwed up your career. Okay, that’s an exaggeration but you made a huge mistake.

yea I heard the company you work for overshadows the position.

wait, you really think it was a bad decision?? =(
The company i turned down was Prudential. I personally thought GS ops looked better than Pru sales & trading… I still do actually. I don’t regret the decision, but I’m curious to hear your perspective.

Could you expand on why you think it was a bad decision?

hey guys one simple question: the ones that got first round interviews applied through their school’s career website right? My school only has i-banking/ wealth management/equities, and I want to do operations. Why is that and what can I do?

you would really rather do operations than be in any of the big revenue generating divisions at goldman? first time I’ve ever heard that one.

Hi Libor, I stumbled upon this thread from a year ago and it is relevant to what I am experiencing right now. I was wondering if you contacted anyone or talked to anyone between the time you interviewed/applied and the time you heard back. I had my first round interview on Feb. 2nd 2010 and then got an email a week later saying that I am on hold. In the email it said that if there are any changes that may affect my candidacy, then I should let them know. I was wondering if I should tell them something positive that could help my chances. Did you contact anyone trying to convince them?? I have been patiently waiting and have literally been “praying to all the gods”. Ahh the suspense…

I had my interview last Thursday and I have heard no news as of late. Should my hopes for an internship in operations be on the decline.

I interviewed on Feb. 9th for the operations internship and got an offer on March 1st. I didn’t hear anything from them between those dates. I heard that a lot of interns are given offers to come on full time after the summer. The question I have is does Operations, even at a prestigious firm like Goldman Sachs look weak on MBA applications? I know that MBA schools look for more than what the job was, but rather for advancement, promotions and such. From everything I’ve read, Operations seems like the job everyone stays far away from. Will it come to bite me in the long run if I decide to work Ops full time until MBA school?

Hello everyone,

I have been accepted for an year work placement in London Operation division. I know some people here thinks this is a madness as Ops is awful and also a dead end. But I’ve accepted it. I am looking for someone who actually did this kind of internship and who could tell with which division I should work : derivatives, private wealth management,
investment banking, global control, etc…
Thanks for you help !

Hey risiko,
When did you have you final round interview?? and when did you hear about getting the job… i have my final interview on monday morning… what kind of questions did they ask you ??

thanx in advance !!!

I just got accepted!!! I had my interview 15 days ago and they called me today to tell me that I was accepted.

The questions are very targeted : your desire : why Goldman Sachs ? Why Operations ?
Then they discuss your experience : tell me about a time your show your leader qualities, tell me about a time you showed your team mindset. They want to know more about you and you have to show them that you are more interested in what they do : prepare some interesting questions for them…

I not difficult just be persuasive.

hehe, congrats! I also interviewed about 16 days ago and they emailed me to call them back yesterday… I thought I was gonna get a second round of interview, totally stunned when they gave me the offer.

waited two weeks and heard nothing, lost all hopes and madly applied to three other companies.

everyone, if you don’t hear back in like two weeks, this, at least in my case, is good news. Before the call-me-back email, HR followed up with me and said they really appreciated my patience and anticipate making a final decision in a timely manner. I hated this email and would much rather they reject me up front.

GOOD LUCK everyone =)

risiko… derivatives would be your best bet

Did anyone here interview for the tri-state consortium? Did you hear back?
