Opinion on Biotechnology major?

<p>I’m getting ready to apply to IU, and I was wondering your guys’ opinion on the Biotechnology major there. Here is the link to the program’s site: </p>

<p>I’m confused by this program… Is it basically a Biomedical Engineering major? I know I don’t want to just major in ‘plain’ Biology, and from what I’ve researched on Biotech it sounds right up my alley. But then there is the ultimate question: risk the GPA for a major with more job prospects, or do the easy major but risk job opportunities. </p>

<p>A biomedical engineering major would use engineering to design medical stuff like… artificial heart valves or cochlear implants. This is very different.</p>

<p>Biotechnology is more akin to your standard biology.</p>

<p>How does Biotech differ from normal Biology?</p>

<p>It focuses more on application of the science rather than the science compared to normal biology.</p>

<p>Biology is more naturalistic in nature - studying gene expression, population control, etc. Biotechnology combines the artificial, synthetic side of the world with organic material.</p>

<p>Thanks guys. Went ahead and applied as a Biotech major at IU, as well as a Health and Disease Bio major at Purdue. Anyone else applying at these places?</p>
