Opinions on Amazon Fire 7 tablet or other budgetary tablets

Anyone here have experience with an Amazon Fire 7 or other budget tablets priced between $40-$100?

Am interested in user experiences with them. Would they be good starter tablet for someone who has never had one and tends to be hard on their stuff so an Ipad or higher end android equivalent is out.

I’m using an Azus Zenpad (Android) which got thrown in as a bonus when I signed up for my most recent Verizon wireless package. (They actually said, “Here, take this tablet too for $1 a month for three years,” AFTER I had signed up for the new package–how could I refuse?) I think the retail price of the lower end models is in your range. I guess considering what it’s costing me, I don’t have terribly high expectations, but it does seem perfectly adequate. I checked it out on CNET when I first got it, and the review was decent. I’m no tech genius and I had never used an Android device before, but I adjusted to it easily, and don’t have a problem switching between the Azus and my iPhone several times a day.

I had a Fire 7 HD and loved it. The only real beef I had with it was that it only worked on Wi-Fi, which is why I passed it on to a friend and got an iPad last year. For the money, though, it’s an outstanding product.

I am very happy with my Kindle Fire. Use it for books, email, tooling around the internet etc. It is wi-fi only but I can make that work. The Kindle did not seem to be enough for my D who “needed” a tablet that could function more like a computer (she uses it for school/work).

We bought a Fire 7 recently. It’s a decent tablet. Not great, but decent… Good enough for media consumption, and casual internet surfing. Just a couple minor gripes:

  1. Not a big fan of the UI, but it’s workable.
  2. The volume doesn’t quite go low enough for viewing movies/shows in bed around bedtime.

My opinion: If you are not a techie, and just need something for reading books, watching movies/TV shows, and internet surfing, then I would recommend it. If you are a techie, and value a high quality display, polished UI, and access to a bigger app store, then I would skip it.

Thank you all for your feedback!

As for concerns the Fire 7 or comparable budgetary tablet may not be enough for the individual I’m researching this for:

Only being able to work on wi-fi internet would be fine for the individual I’m researching this for.

He’s never had a tablet, will only use it for the very basics(internet usage, listening to music/watching youtube videos, reading ebooks, etc).

And as he’s had a past history of being hard on his stuff(breaking/damaging stuff), a more expensive tablet is out.
