Opinions on B.A./M.A. dual programs

Hello, everyone

I decided to post this question here because I’d figure with an older crowd I can a more reliable (and insightful) number of responses. At my school, Penn State, there is a dual 5-year program where one has to apply to obtain both their B.A. and M.A. Fortunately and luckily, they have what I want to study, which is Media Studies. I am seriously considering applying since I do plan on getting my phd anyway. Also, I plan on sticking to academia; I love going to school and being in school…forever. Haha you can call me crazy.

Anyway, I plan on either teaching and/or possibly using my advanced degree creatively to find a job through the industry/business/journalism. But I really want to do this program because:

1.) I get to get involved in research. This is probably the biggest thing that interests me in my field. Field research, particularly, interests me and I want to study specifically film influences on the mass audience members such as the auteur theory and how it can effect one’s view on a subject after being exposed to something that might have seemed so “real” to them (luckily my school has the film option, yay!).

2.) I get to write a thesis. Honestly, this sounds like an absolute blast because not only do I get a chance to share my ideas with everyone, but how I can apply my skills I’ve learned in school to the real world. I already have SO many ideas.

3.) It also doesn’t hurt to get my M.A. by the time I’m 22/23. It’s nice to actually get it and move straight into a phd program. I’m not into ‘waiting a few years to build experience’ and then applying. I really like my department here at this school and I’m already involved in a lot including the school newspaper, in which I write about films and social influences. I also have a film blog, which I update whenever I have the time to.

I’ve met with my counselor and briefly talked about it and this really sounds like a great idea for me. For phd, I’m looking at NYU, Berkeley, and UCLA. I feel crazy since I’m a freshmen, but my counselor is encouraging me to start early, especially if these are my goals.

Ok, so I just kind of digressed lol. But I guess what I’m asking is your input on this plan. Is this the way to go (with my ideas)? What are the pros and cons of going this route (other than staying at the same school longer, more tuition, etc.)?

Thanks!
