Opinions on Laser Hair Removal

My daughter is interested in having laser hair removal treatments. I have no personal experience and don’t fully trust the reviews on the various companies’ websites. Anyone willing to share how effective the process was? Painful? Worth the cost? Any recommendations for the Houston or Dallas area?

They all say they work. They DON’T all work. Make sure to research the different types of laser and IPL. Most laser actually falls short and only certain IPLs have long term success. Its all about marketing. Buyer beware!

I have heard that your type of skin makes a difference. Some light skinned (think Scandinavian) can get a permanent burn from the process.

And dark skinned (think Latina) can create problems because the lasers/IPL work on contrasts and have difficulty picking up dark hair in one dark skinned.

I read (can’t remember where) that electrolysis is more effective than laser for facial hair removal. Either treatment costs $$$$ so it’s an important decision. And I’ve heard laser hair removal is definitely painful. Never had it done though.

I would find a board-certified dermatologist and discuss it with him/her. I would also only have a dermatologist’s office perform the treatment. It’s probably more expensive, but hey – this is your body we’re talking about. (Well, your daughter’s body.)

Agree with the dermatologist office recommendation. Skin color & hair color (and coarseness) affect the outcome. It is not a comfortable process, but I’d hesitate to say “painful.” Kind of like rubber bands snapping against the skin. Our dermatologist offered a prescription for a numbing cream to be applied about 1/2 hour before the process.

Feel free to PM me if you’d like more info. One family member has PCOS and it was as close to necessary as a cosmetic procedure can be; for another one it was for convenience.
