Opinions on outsourcing?

I have been doing quite a bit of research and reading analysis in regards to outsourcing/insourcing. I am wondering what, as parents, your opinions are on the matter. This is especially relevant for parents with students interested or studying Computer Science or IT. Are there any fear amongst parents about the future job market for IT professions and computer programmers?

This does not apply only to the computer industry. From manufacturing to Engineering many US based jobs are be given to savvy educated folks around the world who are willing to work for far less than Americans. Can this be attributed to the American attitude that we are better than everyone else? I mean I love America, but it is not too hard to argue with the fact that a lot of Americans are lazy and feel as though they deserve to earn more for less work. What can we do to insure that our futures are not tainted by big corporations whose greed will leave them unwilling to hire Americans, due to the financial benefits of outsourcing work?

I’m in the computer industry and both of my Ds are pursuing CS degrees. I don’t have any major concerns about outsourcing although I’m not crazy about many of the outsourced (offshored that is) business - mostly because I find it far easier and more efficient to deal with someone more local, someone who understands American English natively (most Indians I’ve dealt with don’t), etc. I also hate dealing with outsourced help desks - there was another thread on this topic.

Anyway, there are a lot of job opportunities available in the CS field in this country. The demand is high, starting salaries are high, potential salaries are good, and the future looks bright IMO and according to government forecasts. If anything there may be a problem that the US isn’t producing enough CS and certain other types of engineering professionals.

What can be done about outsourcing?? - Make sure we’re more competetive, innovative, and efficient than the other locations. There’s really no other way I can think of since we live in a global economy.

Outsourcing is a matter of perspective. From the perspective of American business and American consumers, outsourcing is a good thing because it permits an efficient flow of capital and usually results a reduction in the cost of goods and services. From the perspective of an employee whose job has been outsourced, however, outsourcing is horrible and can destroy all a person has worked for over the course of a lifetime.
