Opinions???

So Maryland was my #1 choice but unfortunately I was rejected EA. Now it looks like I will be attending JMU in the fall unless I get into Udel or Uconn which are both doubtful with a 1540 SAT. But my question is because I still LOVE UMD could I transfer in from wherever I go? What sort of grades would I need to get to be a competitive applicant? How early could I transfer in?

From people who’ve posted here in the past, You probably should assume to be in a different school for at least 2 semesters (of course, you’d start your transfer applications during that time). You should get the highest grades you can. Generally, over a 3.0 seems to be a cut-off (especially if you are not transferring from a MD CC or other MD school); lower GPAs have gotten in as transfers, and higher GPAs will make it easier. They seem to be forgiving of SAT and h.s. GPA if you show that you are a serious student.

That said, wherever you go, embrace it. You may find that JMU feels like home and you can have a successful college career and make the most of it wherever you go. It’s all in what you put into it.

Good luck.

Aim for a 3.5. The fall 2011 transfer class average GPA was a 3.41.

That being said, I have heard of people with GPA’s of 3.8 getting denied so it isn’t guaranteed.
