Opportunities at Cornell

Hello! I was admitted to Cornell Class of 2019 and I know it’s a great school to be at, but the side effects of being in a small town make me weary of the school. I’m planning on going pre-med and I wonder how many internship opportunities there are for college students in a town as small as Ithaca.

So that being said, are there lots of opportunities to intern and work in Ithaca?
Are there resources for students to get “real world” experience while studying at Cornell?

Thanks for all your help!

Maybe these old threads help?

@paintsplatterla‌ Cornell has a great program called the FRESH Externship - I’ve participated in two and had great experiences.

“The FRESH program allows first year students to be matched with a externship of their choice to get an insider’s view of an organization, career field, or position by conducting information interviews and/or visiting with Cornell alumni and other professionals during Spring Break. This program will help you learn how to research organizations, interact with professionals in the world of work, and assess your fit with your field of interest.”

Ithaca is a great area that is more active and exciting than its external reputation grants it. Please don’t let that dissuade you.

Maybe it’s just me, but feeling “weary” of a school’s location before ever arriving on campus is kind of a red flag. As a premed student, you’re probably going to be under more stress than the majority of the student population, and in combination with Ithaca’s semi-rural location and climate, this may prove to be more than what you signed up for.

I don’t want to discourage you from the school and think it’s great that you’re interested, but in my opinion, the biggest arbitrator of whether or not someone will be happy at Cornell is * whether or not they want to be there in the first place*. It would be unfortunate if you were here in 6 months asking for advice on how to transfer out…

Best of luck!
