<p>What sort of opportunities? Study, backpacking, volunteering…? </p>
<p>London, however, is not the “real England” that you sounds like you want. Make sure you get out to other places, both big cities and more rural areas. </p>

<p>Unless you are an EU citizen, you will probably need a visa to work in the UK. You could try a program like BUNAC to sort this out for you (Google them).</p>
<p>Do bear in mind that the economy is not that great here at the moment, so unless you have some specialist or high demand skill, you are likely to struggle to find a job. Working a minimum wage</p>

<p>Job in London will be drudgery and you will barely be able to afford to eat. If you are looking for unskilled work, try farming or tourism. Then at least you will be in a cheaper area and might get housing included.</p>
<p>@boomting, I don’t have too much preference for the summer, but mainly working or studying like for classes. I don’t think I want to try backpacking until I get older, and intend to do it for most of Europe.</p>
<p>I most just want to see what its like there and see how the cities and things are. I didn’t think Britain’s economy and such was that bad, but hopefully, I wouldn’t be there for too long.</p>
<p>Unless you have an EU passport or otherwise have the right to work in the UK already then working will be a non-starter, and unfortunately you also can’t volunteer on a tourist visa. It should also be noted that the economy isn’t great - there’s unemployment of around 7.8% at the moment. </p>
<p>If you were a non-native English speaker looking to improve your language skills, then I could point you in the right direction. However, I can’t say that I am entirely au fait with other summer study options within the UK. </p>
<p>Why don’t you want to go backpacking until you’re older? If it’s about safety, then quite seriously don’t worry about it. The UK is, when you compare crime stats, far safer than the US (you’re ~6x less likely to get murdered, for instance), it’s English speaking, well connected, lots to see and do, and generally very navigable for a backpacker. I first went backpacking, solo, around Australia at the age of 19 and had a whale of a time.</p>
