Oprah!!

Will announce that she will be ending her show.

Will she end it or not?

Nah, I think she’s just taking it to cable.

Yeah, she bought (!!) Discovery Health. Next year, it will be changing it’s name to the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). I suspect her show will move there.

Supposedly Sept 2011. That will be a sad day in broadcasting.

Sad because she’ll be leaving the networks, or sad because now she’ll have her own? I don’t watch Oprah, or any of that type of show. I’m sure we won’t see or hear any less of her, unfortunately.

mamabear1234 - whether a fan or not, Oprah has made a mark and her imprint is one that won’t soon be forgotten. She has brought many ‘uncomfortable’ subjects to the forefront, which I believe is something that many journalists and entertainers should be doing (especially the journalists).

Oprah is bigger than her talk show. I think she should spend less time doing that anyway. She seems kind of bored with that format, the few times I’ve seen it lately, I’ve seen her eyes glaze over while listening to a guest. Still, I’m a fan, even without following anything she does. She’s that amazing.

I was shocked to hear this on GMA. I can’t think of anyone who could take her place. I wonder what her future plans are.

Oprah is OK, but she is boring. Did she really “bought Discovery Health” or it was a joke? If so, I hope she does not ruin it. This is one of my favorite.

Oprah is more than a talk show (which I too find boring most of the time.) This African American woman became a phenomenon because she made tens of millions of white American women want to have her as a best friend. I’m not sure if without Oprah we’d have Obama.

“Oprah is bigger than her talk show”? I always thought she was just plain big!

wow I can’t believe some of comments.
I love Oprah- I don’t watch any TV ( except House & Bones on FOX.com), but you cannot overestimate the affect she has had .

Perhaps ending the talk show will give her more time to move to different projects. That’s what I expect to see.

She is moving on to focus on her failing network OWN.

OWN is the Oprah Winfrey Network.

When one of my twin sons died at two days old twenty-three years ago, I was (of course) deeply sad. There were two points in my day that kept me going: I Love Lucy was on from 12 to 12:30 (and I knew I was recovering when I could laugh at it), and Oprah was on from 5 to 6, and my husband ALWAYS came home at 6. It was comforting to have some contact with the “real world” as I nursed my son and tried to be a good mother to my 14-month-old daughter.

I think a network with Oprah behind it will do some pretty neat things. Could we have a news show that provides real discussion–not argument for the sake of argument–about women’s issues? How about a show where women talk about something other than their boyfriends?

My younger daughter really enjoyed Oprah, she discussed topics on her show that as a teen she would never talk about with me ( which mostly everything fell under).

I think it provided a healthy perspective, especially compared to the * Gossip Girl* POV, that some teen girls were getting.

I also appreciate Oprah and her book club, it was great how she gave the classics a whole new readership ( although I admit, once a book had Oprahs sticker on it- I said to my self * oh, no, I can’t read that now* )
;)

I hardly ever watch the Oprah show, but here’s my favorite Oprah memory.

It was during the whole ‘Oprah vs. the Texas Cattlemen’ brouhahah years ago. When Ms. O showed up in Texas town for the trial wiith her whole TV production company in tow, a local rancher bigwig stated in no uncertain terms that she wasn’t welcome in Texas. Well, as we all know, thousands of [mostly middle-aged white women] came to the show to demonstrate support for Oprah. And the funniest statement came from the mayor, who said he was delighted to have Ms. O and her TV crew in town. The mayor invited the rancher to lay down upon one of the railroad tracks in town and stay there until a train passed and knocked some sense into him.

I didn’t watch her show much, but I have a lot of respect for her.

LakeWashington, what a great story!

I was not joking, Oprah really did buy Discovery Health and will be renaming it the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) sometime next year.

The change was supposed to happen this year but was delayed without explanation.

Sounds like I am up to losing yet another channel that is worthwhile to watch.
