Everyone’s been talking about how there is such a huge increase in applicants, but does this mean it’s actually harder to get into schools like Yale? More applicants doesn’t mean SAT scores or GPAs are increasing nationwide. Is the number of competitive applicants really increasing?

i know someone who talked to one of the admissions committee people who said that this year there’s an unbelievable amount of qualified applicants

Not necessarily … but it means that people who were on the edge before have a lot more company there, and .: less will probably get in.

It’s true that GPAs and SATs aren’t increasing nationwide, but because there are more applicants it is harder to get in. To make things simple, let’s say Yale admitted applicants based solely on SAT scores. Two years ago, they would have taken the top 10% of applicants or whatever. Now, with more applicants, the 90th percentile SAT score is still the same…but you actually need to do a bit better than that, because they can now only accept the top 8%. Obviously, the situation and the math aren’t nearly as simple as that, but the lesson should be the same.

I think that because of Yale’s new financial aid initiative there are more qualified applicants. People who might not have applied before are doing so now because Yale is one of a very few schools that gives aid to upper middle class families.

I think that admissions will definitely be more competitive this year. Obviously a greater number of applicants doesn’t mean that everyone’s grades are increasing, but I think it means that the number of people with those higher grades is increasing.

ugh this is not good to hear

The only optimistic way to look at it is that if you WILL go to college, be it Yale or somewhere else. Yale can’t accept all the amazing applicants it has this year. You will be bound to meet them no matter where you end up.

Your life is what you make of it.

very optimistic words asiantofu =)
i got another one!!!
people will be super nice to you if you don’t get in!
and another one!!!
hundreds of thousands of other people are in your same position since they didn’t get accepted to their top choice schools
anyone got any more?

If you do get in, you would have beaten out 20,000 people for your spot.

Confidence-boost much?

And if you don’t, no reason to feel bad because 20,000 other people didn’t, either.

Yup, I feel happier already. :D

wow, NJBKitty’s post does make me feel happy. :D

We should all post where we finally end up going on CC.

CC Alumnii relations for future job /win?

lol icecreampopcorn nice little shout-out for mun :D

Here are my optimistic words: from absolutely EVERY single person I’ve talked to, they are ALL happy no matter where they ended up, be it their first choice or their safety. The people who got into their top choices are happy, the ones who got into the matches are happy, even a guy I know who had to go to community college instead of his original plan because he didn’t end up getting enough aid money is REALLY happy where he is! So it all will work out in the end.

That said, I still want Yale so so so so so bad ><

Whoa… I was just about to reply to this thread when the power in my neighborhood went out twice within the span of 30 seconds… scary stuff, lol. I just moved so I’m not used to that sort of thing.

Nice. icecreampopcorn, don’t you think it’s a little strange that your sister was accepted into Yale EA and Cornell ED at the same time? May I put forward my opinion that I think you are spamming to some degree here, however well-intended it is?

Agreed.

Pft, and I had started to feel a little more hope about my SAT scores. :[

hahahahahahahhahaha icecreampopcorn… busted!
