Options for art programs in Tennessee

Im a senior in high school in west tennessee. I’m wanting to study animation and illustration and there’s only two colleges in tennessee with an animation major. Those are MTSU and ETSU. I have contacted some students attending art classes at MTSU and have heard the classes art not that strong. This concerns me because I dont have many art skills to begin with, so I don’t want weak classes. I don’t have the money to attend Memphis College of art to study animation and was wondering if it would be a good idea to just go to community college and get my liberal art classes out the way to cut the cost on going to MCA?

Are you needing to stay in TN for in-state tuition? If so, you might want to consider an illustration major and then try to go to grad school for animation. Also look at SCAD, it is not as expensive as many art schools and does give decent scholarships, and has a top-rated animation program. University of Central Florida might be another affordable option for you to study animation as an undergraduate. My S’s girlfriend is at Watkins College of Art in Nashville on a full scholarship, and though it does not have an animation major is it an excellent art school. You could also do the community college route and go to MCA later, though I am not familiar with MCA. Many art-only schools are quite particular about their foundation programs and don’t accept community college credits. Good luck!
