Options for Blowing Freshman Year

S was accepted to USNA and also received an NROTC scholarship (full tuition and monthly stipend). Smart kid, right? Well, not so when he got to college. He decided he liked snowboarding much more than studying, and got a 1.0 GPA his freshman year. He is taking this year off to regroup, work and get fired up about school again. What are his options for going back to school again? Would only community colleges accept him now or do any 4 year colleges/univ know that this happens to some students? Obviously he had good grades in hs and ACT scores. Do they look at that? Any help would be welcomed. It’s been a hard year!

I’m sorry your son had such a rough start, but as you recognize, he’s certainly not alone. What options is he considering at this point? I’m guessing you live in VA. There are some wonderful CC choices here (I live in VA). Is he looking for a local school, instate, or out of state? Is his NROTC scholarship fully revoked now, or can he recover it?

Yes, we’re in VA and he’ll probably take a course this summer from a CC to make sure he’s ready to study. He decided he didn’t want to be in the Navy, so the scholarship dosen’t matter now. He’d like to go to an in-state 4 year school as soon as possible, we just didn’t know if any would accept him.

College admissions have seen stituations like your son’s many times. After he has a year off, I think that he would be admitted by some 4 year colleges with his ACT scores and hs transcript. Not UVa or VaTech but others with more liberal admissions reqts.

However, it may be better for him to attend a college as a commuter for a semester or two with a transfer thereafter. The year off to regroup, work and mature a bit is definitely a good thing. If he is a serious, responsible kid he should be raring(?) to go.
