Options for Graphic Design Major / Dance Choreography Minor?

Hi all - daughter is a HS junior and looking for colleges that offer a graphic design major and a dance choreography minor. (Her ideal situation upon graduating would be to consistently work in both fields, but we feel majoring in the more practical field is the smarter choice in case she needs to work in the corporate world to build her resume up enough to buy herself the freedom to work how she really wants to later.) She had the grades and test scores to be a very competitive candidate most places and at this point in our search, we’re open to any and all schools if they meet the major/minor dream combo. Thanks in advance!

A lot of the top academic schools that have strong dance programs do not have majors that are quite as practical as graphic design. Often you can major in studio art and take some graphic design classes, but that’s not the same as a specialized program.

VCUArts has a top graphic design program (BFA in Graphic Design | VCUarts) and also has a strong dance program that offers a minor in dance and choreography (Minor in Dance and Choreography | VCUarts) in addition to their dance BFA. A BFA may be a little tougher to add a minor to than a BA, but if she has AP’s the cover a lot of gen ed requirements, that could help to make it viable. There’s also an honors program with honors housing, priority registration, and other perks (Honors | VCUarts). This seems like a good “proof of concept” school to be a yardstick for others.

Ohio University has a Graphic Designs degree and a Choreography/Performance Dance minor. They are both under the College of Fine Arts so it should work out very well. https://www.ohio.edu/fine-arts/art/graphic-design/bfa

Here is a list from College Navigator (feds’ website using IPEDS data) of the 73 schools that offer majors in dance and graphic design, with the assumption that a minor in dance is also available. Knowing nothing about what your daughter desires out of college besides graphic design and dance, below is an assortment of schools in different selectivity ranges (sorted by the overall admissions rate…though if a school requires a portfolio for entry into graphic design or an audition into the minor, the overall admissions rates mean absolutely nothing).

If you let us know more (preference for regions of the country, urban/suburban/small town/remote, size of the school, Greek life, intercollegiate sports enthusiasm etc) as well as a budget, people can provide more tailored recommendations.
