Hi – I have a son that wants to go back to college to get a second degree after not being able to find a job using his first degree. He was accepted to a local state school near us last semester but never committed nor did he ask to defer his admission, and now he’s missed both the application and registration deadlines for the semester that will start in January. (Long story why.) It appears he’s also missed deadlines even for the local community colleges. Has anybody else been through this? I know he’ll have to call the admissions department for local colleges when they are back from the holidays, but I’m just seeking to understand what he might hear in the meantime.
Let him work it out. He missed the deadlines. They might allow him to take a certain number of credits as a NOT matriculated student…and then he can apply for admission for the fall.
Our local public four year university allows students to take up to 12 credits as a non-matriculated student. After that…they either matriculate…or they are done there.
The community colleges deal with this all the time. I am sure he can still register if classes haven’t started and there is space. Suggest to him he gets there first thing after break. If he is serious about making the change let him work it out as thumper said. I question if he needs to go all the way back to CC for a second major. Usually those schools offer basic low level courses that fufill 1st and second year requirements. He may be able to skip those classes.
Is your son going to continue to work while attending college or is he planning on going FT? I ask because I have a son who loves to go to school, but misses deadlines and does not perform as well as he could in classes. We cut off the funding for school last year. Once he proves to us he is serious we will pay again. He is also wishy washy in a long term career. We have told him to start with something and go from there, you can always go back (like your son). While your son may not be able to find a job in his chosen field, he surely can find something, I suggest he start back at school PT, night while working during the day. Good luck.
Thanks everyone. Yes, he will call. He has done everything from the original application through meeting with advisors. I haven’t done any of it for him other than help him think through options.
Again–long story on why he is where he is now some which is his fault and some not. He has a degree in Aerospace Rngineering with a 3.1 gpa which is not great but still above the 3.0 cutoff that many Engineering companies set. He never managed to get himself an internship–should have tried harder and is paying a price for that now. He also has chronic health issues which are not his fault–hospitalized 4x his last semester, pumped full of steroids in order to get through graduation, and then went right into the hospital after graduation for major surgery. He’s been working part time while looking for a job. He did seem to have interest from one company but they pulled back and said they have to wait until Jan to hire. They said they’d contact himto see if he’s interested and available then, but he needs a “Plan B” in case that doesn’t materialize. Adding a Computer Science degree–or at least some computer science classes–gives him a way to get a bit of a do-over and those are skills he can use if he does get an AE job.
But again, yes, he’s doing it.
I think he’s going to try the non-matriculating option and see if he can get useful comp sci courses. He has the basics already, so prob not anything useful at a community college.
He probably should not be in for a second degree but instead be picking up the classes relevant to his needs. Many computer science jobs likely would open up to him once he has the skills, ie classes, needed for competence. He should discuss career options with his local community college advising center- something that should be available to residents nd not just the CC students.
