I have a $1500 budget for a “device” for school. I have been reading where some folks use on iPad for college. Is this really doable? Some options I have came up with are-

1- MBP
2- iPad with a laptop
3- Just an iPad

A little background- I have a gaming PC hooked up to my TV. This isn’t ideal for school simply because I will be constantly on it since all my classes this semester are online. Also the awkward sitting position since I will be either on the floor or on the ottoman. It’s also the main TV for my house (husband and 6yo). I really didn’t want to take over the TV. I recently switched from Android to iPhone and simply love the OS. Slick and smooth and no hang ups. The iPad could also be shared with my 6yo since they use them in school as well. I’m kinda at a loss at what to really do. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! TIA

I would go for the MBP so you can have a way to connect your main college device with VGA, printers (non-wireless), and USB’s. But if you want the iPad to help your 6 year old as well, start looking for laptops with comparable specs to the MBP. I wouldn’t go for just the iPad; it’s not as practical for simple tasks like data sharing with USB or connecting to projectors. Of course, if you don’t do any of those, that’s not an issue.

I agree, I’d go with the MBP or even the Air (which is what I have). My friend initially brought just an iPad to school and she ended up getting a laptop as well because the iPad couldn’t do what she needed it to do (she is also a nursing major, actually). All she ended up doing on her iPad was look at emails and do a quick response if she needed to, playing games, and reading.

One plus to the iPad is the iBooks app. Some of your text books might be available for it can could save you a good sum of money.

It really boils down to your personal preference. If you’re going to be storing and/or sharing a lot of files for any sort of reason, get the laptop. If not, you could get an iPad. If would prefer the iPad, but want a keyboard, they have a few that you can connect to the iPad for convenience.
