ordering checks

Does anyone still use or need checks? D needs a few to pay rent and I’m wondering where the best place is to order from. (our bank has always been pretty expensive.) Do you have a favorite company where you order checks?

Our bank will send a check to anyone…part of our online banking service.

However, having said that, I have two checking accounts. I ordered my checks from one of the vendors advertised in the Sunday coupon section. I like Designer Checks…although they discontinued my Curious George checks, and now I’m stuck with tweety bird.

They always have some kind of introductory offer going.

Gosh, even I need a few checks every now and then. I keep running across an occasional place that does not take credit cards (such as my massage therapist).

For over 15 years I’ve been using ChecksUnlimited.com. I don’t know if they’re still the best deal, but it’s just most convenient for me, to order online when I need them.

I’ve used them too, Teri!

To the OP…you should check your bank first. Both of my kids got checks from the bank…and I have to say the first batch was either free or very inexpensive.

Ordering through a third party company can be cheaper, but be careful–I was gobsmacked to see that one check printing company (Carousel IIRC) blithely sent me notices via email saying that I needed new checks…and included my bank account number in the email!

So now we just order through the bank.

Another vote for checksunlimited.
Long time frugal customer.
I always wait for a promo code in an email for buy one box get one free.
Only use paper checks infrequently now so two boxes last forever.
I buy the plain basic ones and they’re fine.

I use most of my personal checks to pay for baby presents for my online friends. I write a fair number of checks as part of my business - pay the engineer, or for permits.

DS1 likes the place he rents from because they do everything on line.

I’ve used checks unlimited also, and they’ve been fine.

Have used a number of different companies, usually the ones in the Sunday ad as well. Checks Unlimited, Direct Checks, Current, and several others have all been similarly priced and a fraction of the price our bank used to charge. Now that we keep a minimum balance in the account, we get a free box of checks for the asking.

Costco also prints checks for reasonable prices; relatives use them but I’ve never tried them.

Both my checking account (Santander formerly Sovereign) and my daughter’s (B of A student checking) give free checks. I have never paid for a check in my entire life (and I still pay all my monthly bills with checks not online).

I think it is good to have your student have a few checks in case they encounter someplace that won’t take cash or credit card (some activities at her school have been pay by check only).

I still use a lot of paper checks, even though many of my payments are now automatic. I order them through the link provided by my credit union. It’s pricey, but I don’t use as many as I used to.

DD got a checking account about 7 years ago when she went off to college. She had just the starter book of 25. There have been a few times with rent deposit and such that it was very handy.

I use checks periodically as well. I pay the cleaning lady by check. Many banks have free checks (basuic checks). Also, I have ordered from Costco. Very inexpensive, IIRC.

This got me thinking…so I checked my account. I actually get free checks with my account. But really, they aren’t nearly as nice as my Tweety Bird, and Disney Character checks. I’m not a fan of the plain ones!

I always buy mine through Costco and have not had any problems.

D has to pay rent via check. I pay several monthly bills via check. I like the plain ones from the bank just fine, especially when they’re free. :)

Maintenance fees, taxes, contractors, and more either require or are much more conveniently paid using checks.

My insurance premiums, estimated taxes, excise tax, dmv, income tax and a host of things don’t incur “convenience fees” or service charges when I use checks instead of charge. Also, if mailing funds, prefer to mail checks over other forms of payment. It works well for us. Checks are nice to copy to prove payment was made, if you believe it may be a potential issue.

Checks Unlimited user here. Great prices, prompt delivery.

Here’s my chance to complain about Walmart’s check service. Tried to order online. The process was quite buggy. Called the customer service number and sent an email. Never heard from them. From then on it was Checks Unlimited or one of the other many online check printers.

Just a note re cute checks: more and more places scan checks for payment and the designs can cause delays in processing if they make the check hard to read. Look at your check images online and see if the information is legible. I went back to plain checks after seeing how my designer checks looked when scanned.

Yes, LIGHT-colored simple images are much easier to read than complex dark designs. I like that the bank checks have extra security features to discourage fraud.
