Assuming I’m not going to be healed enough to make a big feast this year, DH has me looking at different meals to order. So many choices that all look nicely flexible and easy to order.
I can choose from Whole Foods (that apple smoked turkey sounds divine!!), Fresh Market, and Wegmans.
I’m willing to pay more for better quality and more flexibility in size and choices. Does anyone have any experience ordering from any of these stores? Is there any one clear winner over the others?
TIA
I have been underwhelmed with the prepared foods from Fresh Market.
I would strike them from your list. I don’t think you can go wrong with either WF or Wegmans.
We’ve used Whole Foods for several years and always been pleased. I just asked our adult son if I should make the Thanksgiving meal myself or use WF and he said that WF is fine with him.
I always select my pick up time as late as possible Wednesday night and never have to wait in line. I order for more people than expected so we’ll have leftovers. They’ve always given us a bigger turkey than I specified!
I might be inclined to order from a favorite restaurant or deli. rather than a supermarket
I’m not thrilled w Fresh Market’s sides, so I think that’s a good call @momofsenior1
Whole Foods is very convenient to us and I really like how you can order ala carte. DH says I can lie on the floor of the breakfast room and yell directions at him like some slightly incapacitated Gordon Ramsey… but there will be my homemade stuffing! LOL
I’m intrigued by seeing if any of our local restaurants will do meals. This being our first year here, I honestly have no idea.
There are at least 1/2 a dozen restaurants in our town that do meals. I bet you’ll find you have a lot of options.
Do you have a TJ nearby? TJ has very good, frozen (and fresh) sides & pies and have H (or whomever) cook the turkey, a la Sandra Lee’s semi-homemade!
Yes, we do @momo2x2018 ! I’m not sure what to get though… well, other than the pumpkin cheesecake already waiting in the freezer.
@ChaosParent23 During the holidays, TJ has a variety of ready made foods ie.
soups / roasted veggies / saute kits for brussels sprouts & green beans / mashed potatoes & mashed sweet potatoes / stuffing / gravies / fresh cranberry relish / gratins
Really, they have everything except the cooked turkey!
Only half our family likes turkey, so we’re a tough audience, but we all really liked the smoked turkey breast from the Honey Baked Ham store. Just a thought if you don’t need or want an entire turkey. Can’t comment on their sides, though, since we haven’t tried them.
That’s def an idea!! Polling the fam, the sides they want are all pretty easy. I think DH could cover that much. It looks like the actual turkey and desserts is going to be the hard part. I know my S19 will be heartbroken if I don’t make my apple pie, but it’s really hard. It’s not in DH’s realm of skills.
We just finished a smoked turkey from Costco. Mr. wanted to have a “trial run” before the big day. ? It was very good! Moist and flavorful. Costco also has a bunch of pre-made sides.
I’ve had great experience with whole foods holiday meals. The thanksgiving option is fabulous, and does sell out quickly here. Order online.
We have had the sliced turkey breast, regular and smoked, from Honey Baked Ham Store. It’s good. I think the smoked tastes too much like ham. They put a sweet crunchy glaze on both, if that would bother you. (DH used to get Honey Baked gift cards from a client. I’m not sure I would pay that much if it were my bank account )
My 78 yr old mommy just called to tell me not to worry about xmas cookies this year. She asked when S will be home from college for xmas so she could make sure two huge boxes of all her cookies except for the mini cheesecake tarts got here in time. She’s my hero!
I’m happy enough with Whole Foods and the price is right, so I’m not going to use a restaurant.
I think teaching your son to make the apple pie would be a good idea - mother/son bonding and recipes should be passed down from generation to generation. Invite him to spend an hour or two together - him doing, you instructing.
+1 to looking at local restaurants. Where in the country are you?
I’ve had samples of the Honey Baked Ham side dishes that they give out to folks waiting in line when I’ve picked up a ham. I remember them being tasty.
Learning to make pie crust is hard and depends on a variety of environmental factors. It’s a very hands-on process that he’s not ready for and I can’t stand that long yet.
I’m in Chapel Hill, NC. So we have alot of amenities nearby. We have a beautiful remodeled Whole Foods very conveniently located w/ a Trader Joes just down the street. We also have an amazing bakery here called Guglhupf, but I don’t know if they do pies. I’ve asked DH to take me to Wegmans tomorrow to get some dessert samples as well. I’m hoping they also have their Holiday flyer out.
I personally think Costco has terrific apple and pumpkin pies! The only problem is they are huge!
Trader Joe’s has a turkey roll with stuffing. It comes frozen, just bake. I’ve bought it before and it was very good.
I wasn’t quite sure how to describe it, so here’s a review
