"Four top Oregon prosecutors have put Reed College on notice that they want a “zero-tolerance” policy for all illegal drugs – including marijuana – on the famously nonconformist campus.

Dwight Holton, U.S. attorney for Oregon, Multnomah County District Attorney Michael Schrunk and two of their top deputies summoned Reed President Colin Diver to an extraordinary meeting at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Portland Thursday.

Reed should put Dwight Holton, Michael Schrunk, and whomever else on notice that they should go **** themselves. Reed College is NOT law enforcement. Reed College has no authority to enforce the Controlled Substances Act. Reed College is a private organization and as such, has every right to make and enforce their own drug policies. If Reed is going to act as agents of the police or the FBI, they’ll have to get warrants and such-otherwise, the evidence is inadmissible. It’s just a bunch of US Attorney/DA grandstanding to force Reed to act as an agent of the cops under the color of enforcing their own policy.

Unfortunately, their spineless prez will probably kowtow to their demands.

I want a zero-tolerance policy on burglary. If you steal my stuff, or look like you’re trying to steal my stuff, you should be immediately expelled. Failure to do this is a REFUSAL TO ENFORCE THE LAW.

Not if those drug policies conflict with the federal or state laws. Any concealment of illicit activity or conscious silence leads to legal issues.

The only duty Reed College has is to report the activity to law enforcement. They have ABSOLUTELY no duty to expel the student unless college policy stipulates expulsion upon first instance of drug use/possesion. They especially have no duty to go FIND drug use. What they happen upon, they have to report. What they do not see, they have no duty to act upon. Reed evidently doesn’t, and no prosecutor has the right to tell Reed what to do internally.

Besides, zero tolerance drug policy hasn’t worked for 35+ years, what makes them think it’ll suddenly work?
