Orientation Advising

i was wondering if you had a choice in selecting what professors you have for your courses when you see your academic advisor

I’m not sure since I really didn’t spend time with my advisor. The smartest thing would be to choose your professors beforehand already. After your meeting with an advisor, you’ll register for classes, so you want to be out of there as quick as possible so that you can go ahead and register for class. Biggest tip I can give you for this is sit in the front row in the seat closest to the advisor that way you can get his/her attention after the presentation and get him/her to help you first.

Here’s the catalog of classes:
http://reports.reg.uga.edu/soc/fallsoc.pdf

The only bad thing is that you don’t know which ones are open and which ones are closed because it lists all of the classes offered, but you can at least see what your options might be.

Edit: Actually, I just found this. If you look at that schedule and want to check if it’s open, go on Oasis, get to the registration menu, then click on ‘view courses offered’ and see if it’s still open.

Another tip - if you have a laptop, try bringing it with you. If you’re staying in a hotel the night before, try getting one that will have internet. That night, figure out which classes you HAVE to have. Like, there’s no squirming around. That’ll be the classes you’ll schedule all your other classes around. On the second day, you’ll be asked to go to a mass advising meeting with everybody in your college (basically). For instance, if you’re a BS in Franklin, you’ll be meeting with all the BS in Franklin. Anyway, when it’s finished, catch one of the advisors afterwards and ask all the questions you have so you don’t have to ask during the advising section. Then, see if you can figure out what your test scores are so you know what classes you’ll be taking for math, english, and foreign language (if you need it). Tell them you want to know so you can figure out a schedule. Then pull out the schedule that had which classes you had to have. Then take your laptop, get onto the UGA wireless, and figure out a schedule using the two websites I showed you. You’ll be missing out on lunch and the Greek meeting, but if you’re willing to sacrifice that, you’ll be a set ahead from most, plus, you’ll have a bigger chance at getting the classes you want. Oh, and I’d write down the call numbers of the classes you want. When you get to registering, there are 3 ways to look for your class. The easiest and simplest way is if you have the call number. So write down the call numbers of all the classes you want.

Hope this helps!

i wouldnt bother looking up classes the night before the advisory meetings. I’m going prebusiness and the meeting was VERY informative. they seperated it into sections and told you to choose two that seemed interesting. you may overwhelm yourself by looking at ALL the courses. most of them will probably not even apply to you. when is your orientation date?

Well, yes, if you looked at ALL the courses, you’ll be overwhelmed. However, if you look at your program site at the UGA bulletin, it tells you what you’ll hear at the meeting.

shrugs Up to you. It was great for me since I didn’t have to sit there at the computer and figure out how to fit a schedule. I already had a schedule, so I just put in the numbers, and that was it.

I did the same thing jenmarie did and it worked very well.

So I’m going to my Orientation on Friday, and am almost positive I am changing my major. Obviously, I would like to meet with my advisor that major, and not my current. Is this going to be possible?

Yeah, I’m pretty sure they will let you do that. I think there’s a sheet you’ll fill out to change majors and then you got to the appropriate advisor. I don’t know why they wouldn’t let you…

Have fun at orientation! Bring an umbrella…it looks like it might rain this weekend.

There is a time when you fill out a change of major form…then you will go to the meeting for the correct major…this is how it was last summer when I attended w/ my son.

I emailed the advisors with the same question and they sent this email back:

“You should go to the Academic Area Meeting on Day 1 in the area in which you are most interested and you can change your major that day. If you do that, you should be able to see an advisor in the area to which you have changed when you get advised on Day 2. If you have other questions, you should ask one of the Orientation Leaders you will meet when you get here.”

Something completely off topic… the orientation leaders presentations were amazing! They caught me off-guard. I thought it’d be boring and lame, but it turned out to be better than anything I’ve ever seen… especially “Orientation Live”.
