Orientation Question

Does anyone know if the counselors are actually there when you sign up for your classes because I have heard that you need a hard copy of all scores for them to let you take certain classes. In this case I think I got a 800 on the math II in June but I will only have an online printout by the time I have orientation. I sent it to UNC as well so I hope it gets there within a few days of the scores being released online. If this doesn’t work does anyone know if you have an AP chem score that places you out of chem 101 if you could sign up for 101 even if they don’t let you use the online printout math II score.

You meet with an academic advisor before you register via computer later in the day. They will go by printout scores when it comes to SAT numbers I’m fairly sure. You need to bring a paper copy of everything (whether its from the website or from the mail) - AP, SAT I, SAT II, etc…

And about the chem…if you placed out of chem 101 by your AP score, why would you sign up for it again?

And again, I’m almost certain they let you use the online printouts, and they just trust that you didn’t photoshop anything.

you can sign up for chem 101 again but you have to waive the credit with an adviser once you start but DON’T TAKE 101 IF YOU DON’T HAVE TO! Seriously, that is the best advice I could ever give you. They purposely make 101 super hard to weed out the slackers they don’t want in the chem program. Really, if you placed out, you really really don’t need to take it again. And there are a million people trying to get into 101 and if you don’t have to you should really let someone who does have your seat.

My son isn’t sure about his AP Chem score since results aren’t back until mid July. He’s already been to CTOPS, registered for Chem 101 & got in. We were told that Chem 101 seats were difficult to get. He needs 101 AND 102 for his (likely) major so he wants to get them out of the way & not mess up the sequence. So take than into consideration. I think if you will need 102 it might be extra tough if you don’t have 101 at UNC. Just a thought.

I mean I’m good at chemistry and real driven at it, like I love doing chem problems, its just I feel my ap teacher probably left out some important topics that would be covered in 101, not to mention the labs. Also can a non honors student take chem 102 h and does chem 102 h cover both 101 and 102 but at an accelerated pace, or just 102? I just don’t want to miss any important information and I feel as if I could get an A in 101. How hard is it to get 101 at ctops btw?

I think I’m in the same boat as you celtic but regarding AP Calculus. I got a five on BC and 4 on AB and therefore I do place out of 101 as well. But I also feel like my teacher left out some important topics that I would like to go over as well.

I’ll leave the Honors question to someone else…I really don’t know since I’m only an upcoming 1st yr. parent. But I can tell you they reserve a limited number of seats in the popular 101 classes for each CTOPS session so that each session has an equal chance at the scarce spots. That’s a good thing since they would all be gone by now. If you put classes in your shopping cart before CTOPS even though it appears closed, it makes it easier when you “go live” @ your registration session@ CTOPS when those limited spots are released & up for grabs. Good luck!

At UNC anyone can take honors courses, the Honors students just get first choice
