Orientation

So I’m an international student, so I can’t attend orientation, and I’ll be registering for classes online.

Has anyone here done that? Also, what else will I miss out on at orientation?

I have 5’s in Eng Lit, Calc BC, Physics C: mech and e&m, and micro eco, and macro eco, so which courses are worth skipping according to you guys? I’m an engineering student btw.

You will miss a campus tour, meeting some people with similar majors, some presentations, some academic workshops, and a scavenger hunt type thing at night.

I think you can skip English Composition 3 with the 5 in Eng Lit (satisfing the English I requirement at UCLA).
I think you can start with Math 32A with the 5 in Calc BC.
I think you may be able to pass out of Physics 1A, but I’m not sure (someone with more experience in this department can comment, or you can see/email a counselor).

I attended my orientation late a few years ago, but basically all you do is the super-long campus tours, various academic presentations (like learning about academic dishonesty, etc etc), carpe noctem scavenger hunt (basically you get into groups, and you run around UCLA/Westwood area. It’s a good way to learn the UCLA area although you’ll be super exhausted at the end. Winners get some prizes).
Overall Orientation just help you get ready for college life. Exposing you to living in the residence communities, and your home away from home.

In terms of AP Credits.
Eng Lit - You can get out of EngComp 3.
Calc BC - You can skip Math 31A, (and prbably Math 31B?)
Physics C - You get general units, but Physics 1 Series is required, so you can’t pass out of any classes here. Exceptions are granted by counselors, so talk to them if you really want to pass out.
micro/eco - General units.

Thanks, I’ll email my counselor once I get one :)

Is there any free time at orientation? Like when you can just roam around westwood or the campus and check things out?

Yes, you may have a lot of free time during Orientation. However, if you have an overbearing Orientation Counselor like I had, who asked for all of our cell phone numbers, you may not have a lot of freedom. The presentations are not really required, so you can actually skip them and choose to do your own thing. But my Orientation Counselor made sure that everybody was at every presentation, so it can depend on your Counselor. Some will not really care how you spend your time; others will watch over you. But you’ll still have gaps between events during the day, and most of your nights will be free if you choose to not participate in the events they host.
