I know that platitudinous examples such as Hitler , JFK are less impressive than original ones.
But were do you think an example is too original.

I mean if I will use something from a TV show like heroes or House M.D or even from a comic book like spiderman etc. Will it be to childishness or will it be intriguing?

“Original” need not be synonymous with “contemporary pop culture”. Citing your favorite television show always comes across as a little childish. It’d be more impressive if you were to cite literary/cinematic/historical references beyond the obvious ones, rather than turning to television shows or comics. Not that the essay readers will necessarily be “elitist”, but it does seem somewhat “lowbrow”.

But hey, better to reference Heroes or House M.D is than American Idol. :)

Just explain your things well. I don’t think the content matters THAT much. And I agree with including references beyond the obvious ones. Those would help. Not only it makes you sounds smarter, it makes you the the only person telling the story so that people don’t find faults with it. A lot of people know about Hitler and WW2 so if you cite them they are probably gonna get picky about it since they actually know what happened. I wrote about the battle of Okehazama where Oda Nobunaga’s 3000 miraculously defeated Imagawa Yoshimoto’s 40,000 men in Sengoku Japan. Most people don’t know about this and you don’t have to worry about factual errors. Furthermore, you can stretch this a bit to make your case. That’s why I suggest using unpopular examples such as this. I got a 12 on the essay where I used this weird example.

For instance, you can show that spiderman powers have vices and not only virtues. He became arrogant and that led to uncle Ben murder, or that Mary Jean was kidnaped because someone found about his true identity

Batman- although he tried to help Gotham city and clean the street he led the joker to become the what he is today. So it can be an example of wheter interfering in something is good or bad

Or House ways to find out what his patient has by sending his team to break into their homes and look for clues. show how creativity helps in a place where regular ways failed, you can look at the patient but looking at his milieu is something untraditional
