Osama Bin Laden is dead?

I don’t think the administration had any choice in this. Once they knew or were very sure they knew that Osama was in that compound, they had to go in and get him. I think those Navy Seals are the bravest men on the planet.

But…I don’t feel anything at all. I don’t feel relief. I don’t feel like celebration. If anything, I’m worried that after years of relative calm, we’ve just stuck a stick in the hornet’s nest and there will be terror attacks in retribution.

There always were going to be more terror attacks. It is a matter of when, not if. I don’t think this will necessarily change the time frame. It took many years to plan 9/11. If there is an attack tomorrow or next year, it will not automatically be related to his death.

I didn’t read all thirteen pages…but do you suppose the military waited until after the big wedding, with some heads of state not at home?

I would be shocked if the wedding had any impact. I can’t imagine any way they would wait for anything once they felt the best time had arrived. The last thing we needed was another missed opportunity.

People talk. People make cellphone videos. Sometimes secrets get out.

Far better, in my view, to be perfunctory but not disrespectful. In any case, a human being’s remains should be treated with respect, not because of who Bin Laden was but because of who we are.

I really recommend the book Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell. It is awesome and gives you real insight into the Navy Seals.
Luttrell has a lot of lasting psychological damage from his experiences and has a service dog to help him, but he is one of the best speakers I have ever heard. You pretty much stop breathing while you listen to his story.

I doubt that they were 100% sure that Osama was there.
Yes they were sure

just heard on CNN that intelligence thought there was a 40% to 60% chance that Bin Ladin was in the compound

^^^ Right. They knew the courier lived there with his family, and they knew others who fit Bin Laden’s family’s description were there, but they weren’t positive it was Bin Laden and his family.

I would take all the breathless media reports with a big grain of salt. I very much doubt that the people who really know about the planning and what unfolded are ringing up CNN with the details.

Can you imagine the adreneline rush for the soldier who charged into the room and put a bullet in Osama Bin Laden’s head? I’m sure that he’s lost a lot of buddies in the hunt and has had years of thinking about that particular mission.

Well, his eldest son is furious and is planning to “bomb the crap” out of us. NYC is a prime target… The luck I have…

I think the US should have taken him as a prisoner… They’ve triggered something bigger…

No kidding. Last night while they were awaiting around for Obama to make his announcement (more than an hour after it was scheduled), CNN (television) reporters and announcers claimed to know that Obama was killed a week ago, that DNA tests had been ongoing all week, that bombs or missiles or drones were the method used. Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

What does this change? If they had the ability to “bomb the crap out of us” they would be doing even if bin Laden were still alive. I don’t see why NYC would be any more of a target than it was this time last week.

I don’t think capturing him would’ve angered people any less. Putting him in jail and on trial would’ve utterly humiliated him. For his followers, having him “martyred” is better.

Reports are saying that it wasn’t possible to take him as a prisoner. The SEALs met resistance which required a firefight…

I’m sure the SEALs wish they’d had that option instead of the hail of gunfire.

Comment made by a friend:

“Crazy to be celebrating a death here in the US, but if we had to pick one, OBL earned it. I’m not sure I’ll believe it till I see his long-form death certificate.”

There is no way on god’s green earth that any of those Seals would have seen Osama Bin Laden and not put a bullet in his head.

Debriefing:

Officer: Solder, did you have any options.

Seal: No, sir, he resisted capture, sir.

With Bin Ladin out of the way, someone is going to fight to be the next Bin Ladin. Some nut out there is going to want to be the new face of Islamic terrorism. How to accomplish that? Pull off a big terror attack. Like with gang warfare, the gang member who pulls off the most murders or the murder of a policeman is the leader. Bin Ladin may not have had much actual operational control at the time of his death, but he was the world recognized leader of terrorism. Now someone else will want to take that mantle.

I just hope the identity of any of those involved in the operation is never leaked because whatever recognition they would justly receive will be overshadowed by the threats against their family.

The sad outcome in this affair is this - at least the man was honest. The far bigger threat are all those who feel exactly the way he did, but choose to wear sheep’s clothing, and we seem ready to sing Kumbaya and throw money at them because they’re nice enough to lie to us.

Dadof3, you might be right. However, anyone who was so ill-advised as to try to take on one of the members of Navy Seal Team 6, would clearly be one of the more stupid - and short lived - members of the human race. These guys would make Liam Neeson in the movie “Taken”, look like Mr. Rogers!

" I just hope the identity of any of those involved in the operation is never leaked because whatever recognition they would justly receive will be overshadowed by the threats against their family. "

My nephew was army special forces when Bagdad fell . None of us knew his whereabouts ( as well we shouldn’t have ) The last we knew , he was in training camp that we thought was in Hawaii
There was an AP photo in the local paper that was easily recognizable to his family. The media caught wind of it and interviewed my sister…he was in turn reprimanded by his CO ,though she had no clue this could potentially put him or anyone in the family in harm’s way

The military goes to great lengths to keep identities of their own quiet , so I certainly hope nothing is leaked about those involved in any capacity…
