Oscar Red Carpet 2016

Definitely different strokes for different folks. I thought Chris Rock was spot on.

Show: Pretty boring, at least after the opening bits.

Awards: Awfully predictable, except for Mark Rylance beating out Stallone and Ex Machina somehow interfering with a Mad Max sweep of techie awards other than cinematography.

Dresses: Thumbs up for Cate Blanchett, Alicia Vikander, Daisy Ridley, Tina Fey, Olivia Munn, Priyanka Chopra, Rachel McAdams. Thumbs down for Olivia Wilde, Jennifer Lawrence, Kerry Washington. Split decision on Brie Larson, the dividing line being her waist. The local paper’s fashion reporter pronounced it “too South Jersey prom.”

I kind of liked their take on Black History month, where they saluted Jack Black…I thought Chris Rock’s stuff was to the point, though I think the director of The Revenent made a great point, about the stupidity of tribablism. As far as DiCaprio talking about Global Warming, he made a very valuable point, that to film the movie they had to pretty much go to the ends of the earth to find snow and cold temperatures, and it wasn’t summer. More importantly, his speech was aimed at ‘the ordinary people’ it was aimed at the politicians and powerful and the corporations (Koch brothers, anyone) who are not only not doing anything to meet the challenge, but are doing everything they can to keep breakthroughs from happening, primarily to keep the fossil fuel industry in business. Sure, Dicaprio uses fossil fuels, if you want to fly, you don’t have any other option, no such thing as an electric powered airliner, same way if you take a passenger train long distance, it is likely diesel. The roughly 45% of power that is still generated by coal does a lot more damage than jet airplanes do (jet airplanes are weird, their contrails actually cause cooling to a certain extent). It is why it has to come from a higher level, and that is who he was lecturing shrug

My favorite was Enio Morricone finally winning an Oscar, guy deserved it.

To my mind, there’s just something of really bad taste in having a super rich person who no doubt arrived in a limosine, who has several homes, flies in private jets and generally leads a pampered life lecturing the millions of ordinary people who turn off their lights when not in use because they fear what the electricity bill will be. It’s as if Charlie Sheen gave lectures on safe sex and morality.

I thiught I would post Leonardo’s speech so we can be reminded of what he actually said.

The last 1:20 of the speech deals with climate change.

I liked Tina Fey in her purple gown–classy and not over the top. Naomi Judd also looked great. Really didn’t like most of the other attire–too much and too little.

Agree that the Jack Black joke was funny, although it had a looooong set-up. I also liked the Minions. The Star Wars bots, on the other hand . . .

Speeches: Brie Larson deserves an additional award for saying something that was heartfelt and thoughtful without going over the time limit. For people who went over, Inarritu made it seem worthwhile listening to him. I also liked the Aussie sound guys who deliberately forced a bleep-out.

I enjoyed the show and thought Chris Rock did a good job although some of the bits got to be a bit much. Thrilled that Spotlight won Best Picture and that Mark Rylance won Best Supporting Actor. In terms of fashion, my favorites are:
Cate “The Great” Blanchett- always, always spot on
Naomi Watts-pretty spectacular
Brie Larson - loved the color and the fit, although not so sure about the belt… loved her hair and simple jewelry
Saiorse Ronan- great color but looked like she blew her hair out on the way over to the show
Julianne Moore -always elegant and a bit subdued but she was a presenter, not a nominee
Rachel McAdams - smashing
Charlize Theron - smashingly beautiful
Tina Fey - simple dress, color suited her well as did her hair, loved her necklace

Some comments on the others:
Rooney Mara -somewhat mixed. Her palette is white/black and grey so this fit. Loved the laciness, not a fan of the cut-out
Kate Winslet - liked her hair, the dress seemed like a weird fabric or shiny material
Kerry Washington - ususally a fan, not this choice
Heidi Klum - wouldn’t have minded the bottom, unusual color choice but hated the top and the one armed sleeve look

It turns out that Linda Dunn is a real person…and her daughters always outsold Chris Rock’s. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/oscars/woman-called-chris-rock-no-problem-scout-bit-article-1.2547727

Kate Winslet’s garbage bag dress made her look like Ursula from that Disney animated movie.

JK Simmons said it was a gag and that they gave people in the audience fake money to wave.

@TatinG Leonardo DiCaprio has done soooo much for the global warming cause. He’s a United Nations Messenger of Peace, he created an award winning films about it, he founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, raised tens of millions of dollars, he’s lead public campaigns, met with the Pope and many other world leaders to speak about climate change, He’s served on the boards of the WWF, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Natural Resources Defense Council, among others. He provides support and funding for wildlife sanctuaries, coral reef preservation, marine reserves, forests, degraded coastlines, deferrals for oil drilling,

In order to have the platform that he does, he needs to be a famous actor. I have little to no qualms about him participating in the air travel necessary to be a famous actor. The amount of good that he has accomplished in the world is far, far greater than the gas from the limousine he took to the Oscars. It’s really disingenuous to compare him to Charlie Sheen.

edit: I feel like I need to clarify that I’m not even a huge Leo fan. But it’s insane to say that he doesn’t do an incredible amount of good, and has a huge passion, for this cause.

DiCaprio made a good point in his speech–global warming is a significant issue that we need to address. While DiCaprio may travel by private jet and have a yacht and do other things that people with significant amounts of money do, he also has created a foundation that granted $15 million for global conservation efforts.

At least he’s mitigating some of the environmental ills his lifestyle generates.

I think the show was predictably long and boring. I liked Chris Rock–thought his comments were spot on and made me laugh. Dresses/looks I loved: Robin Roberts (pre-Oscar Red Carpet show host from GMA), Saiorse Ronan, Julianne Moore, Rachel McAdams, Charlize Theron, Jennifer Garner, and Tina Fey (didn’t like her hair up though). I am probably in a minority but I didn’t care for Cate Blanchett’s dress–the color and style were great; I hated those flowery things stuck on her dress.

I hated the pictures of Cate Blanchett’s dress from far away - the looked like Michelle Obama’s first inaugural ball dress with the white puffballs all over it, but pictures from closer up were much more appealing. I think the shape was very flattering and the color looked good on her. I’m pretty sure I’d have liked it better without the flowers, but they didn’t completely ruin it for me. They were fun.

I absolutely loved Cate Blanchett’s dress, flowers and all.

I didn’t like most of the other plunging neckline dresses (except for Charlize Theron’s). I though Saiorse Ronan’s was particularly unflattering (though she still looked beautiful).

I thought the hair overall was bad. What was Brie Larson thinking with that hairdo?

Can we all agree that Charlize Theron looked just smashing? To me she is the epitome of Glamorous Movie Star. (she deserves the capitalization)
