Oscars 2015

My favorite dress was Scarlett Johanson…very Oscar-ish and I loved her hair. Meryl Streep…not another boring outfit. It was classy in that she looked like she was going to a Fortune 500 Xmas Party. A statement necklace would have added quite a bit.

I was getting quite annoyed with the red carpet show! I kept saying, ‘show the dresses!’. And the Melanie Griffith and Dakota Johnson interview was SOOOO uncomfortable. I wonder what they were fighting about beforehand? For 2 actresses, you think they could have put on a better front. Melanie’s plastic surgery, whatever she has done, looks terrible.

couldn’t believe Kardashian was dissing Kendricks dress right at the beginning…seemed so jealous…it didn’t work.

My highlights:

JK Simmons’ win and speech.

The Lego Song, Glory, Lady Gaga’s SOM medley, Julie Andrews’ appearance.

Eddie Redmayne’s surprise and delight at his win. He’s proven himself as an actor on stage (Olivier and Tony awards) and screen. The challenge of playing Stephen Hawking went far beyond playing primarily the physical effects of the disease, and I think it’s a great win.

Graham Moore’s acceptance speech - “stay weird, stay different.” I am certain that his words reached many despairing young people.

Hi, Donna - like you, I watched The Walking Dead instead of the Oscars, and it sounds like I made the better choice (although TWD has been a little slow lately). Come on over to the Dead Thread if you have opinions on last night’s show!

I was shocked by Lady Gaga’s performance last night. I first became aware that she had quite a bit more depth than I had realized when I first heard her sing The Lady is a Tramp on Tony Bennett’s duet album, but still, wow.

I would have loved Scarlett Johansen’s dress if not for the weird and distracting neckline. That just ruined it for me.

None of the acting awards were a surprise. I thought Julianne Moore’s award was definitely deserved. I would have been happy with a Michael Keaton win, but you have to give props to Redmayne’s performance as well, so not a big controversy in my mind.

Best Director and Best Picture were not too surprising either, though any number of films could have legitimately won.

That whole deal with Octavia Spencer “guarding” the briefcase was fairly annoying, though the reveal was a little more interesting than I expected. The part about Meryl Streep “realizing she was underpaid” was amusing.

Overall, a surprisingly disappointing showing by NHP. Maybe it’s a lot harder being himself onstage than playing a character.

If you’d like to see the Gaga performance again (best if you have some quality earbuds):

For some reason, I had to sit through one of the acceptance speeches first.

Not at all. He won several special Emmy awards for the multiple times he has done such an excellent job hosting the Tonys. Now, the Tonys are a much better award show than the Oscars so that may be part of it, in addition to him having the ability there to write his own material. Rumor has it that the Academy had writers for his material last night. A big mistake.

^ Agreed - NPH completely rocks the Tony awards. If you’ve never seen his opening number(s) for the Tonys, do yourself a favor and watch some of them on YouTube - I think they’re clever and witty, and the guy can really sing and dance.

^^^Well, that’s not “rumor,” as he talked about it on The Ellen Show. However, he made it pretty clear that it was a collaborative effort. He mentioned how frustrating it was to see hosts of the prior award shows do jokes that he had planned in his mind to do at the Oscars and how he’d have to cross those out and start from scratch again.

Beats me! Guess you can’t hit it out of the park all the time.

Gosh I thought Scarlett Johansen looked terrible. Didn’t even recognize her at first.

How does Meryl Streep continue to look so good year after year? OTOH, Melanie Griffith looked and acted bizarre.

I’ve been watching Transparent - I think it’s very interesting and not just around the lead character but the entire family dynamic.

I am disappointed that Interstellar won only 1 award. Gravity won 7 awards in 2013 but compared to Interstellar it’s was not that good.

This was the first year in a very long time, where I hadn’t seen all of the Best Picture nominees, so I had no real favorites to win.

It makes me sad that NPH didn’t do as well as I thought he would. Oscar host is such a thankless job because they are so careful to not be too edgy. They even made Chris Rock unfunny! I thought Ellen was great last year.

Show highlights:

  1. Graham Moore’s speech was so moving I teared up.
  2. Lady Gaga. I’m a fan and knew she could sing, but I’d never heard her voice so pure. She absolutely nailed it last night, in front of Julie Andrews. Amazing.
  3. Patricia Arquette’s speech and Meryl and JLo’s reaction.
  4. Common and John Legend’s performance of Glory and their speech after it won. A perfect collaboration and Common was the best dressed man in the house last night as well.
  5. Everything is Awesome performance. Easily the funnest part of the night. I loved how excited people were to get their Lego Oscars. I want one.

Fashion highlights:

  1. Lupita Nyong’o. I normally don’t like that color, but against her perfect skin it looked amazing. I also loved the detail and when she presented it looked amazing on my TV.
  2. Lady Gaga. Most everyone else was boring and she brought it. I even loved the crazy gloves. It was pure theater but she pulls it off.
  3. Laura Dern. As Tom and Lorenzo said it was pure Joan of Arc realness. I love metallics and this was no exception. 4) Margot Robbie. It was very '80s inspired and yet still modern.
  4. Common, David Oyelowo, Eddie Redmayne for branching out of the traditional tuxedo. I mean, Chris Pratt looked great and all, but it’s nice to see men getting more creative.

Fashion lowlights:

  1. Gwyneth Paltrow. Simultaneously boring and WTF.
  2. Naomi Watts. It reminded me of the '90s when I’d wear a bandeau bra under overalls. It could have been great.
  3. Jennifer Anniston. It was boring beige and poorly lined.
  4. Felicity Jones. I hated that neckline.

Interstellar was pretty, but I thought the plot was full of holes. In comparison Gravity was Shakespeare. (And it had a few plot holes too. What little plot it had.)

I was sorry Boyhood didn’t get more awards. I thought it was brilliant. Didn’t see Birdman so I might have thought it was more brilliant, but the bits I saw seemed so over the top.

I didn’t think we needed to go back to powder blue tuxes, but I agree in theory that it would be nice if men could have more fun with their clothes.

I may be the only person who didn’t like Lady Gaga’s singing - it was better than her past efforts, but really paled in comparison to what Julie Andrews did. Honestly, I think that there are far, far better vocalists out there, and I am not sure why you would celebrate Julie Andrews with someone like Lady Gaga.

As for Gravity vs Interstellar, I have only seen the former and it irritated the heck out of me. It was faux-realistic, giving the appearance of realism (when compared to typical Hollywood) but still, apparently deliberately, making just absurd mistakes. If Interstellar is worse, I shudder to think how bad it must be.

I just listened to Lady Gaga again. She was spectacular. Not just her vocals, but also the way she carries herself while performing. I think she is very talented…and diversely so.

I thought Melanie Griffith looked great for Melanie Griffith. And, the uncomfortable exchange with her daughter on the red carpet seemed very real and about what you would have to expect given the movie.

Lady Gaga was okay.

“Meryl Streep…not another boring outfit. It was classy in that she looked like she was going to a Fortune 500 Xmas Party. A statement necklace would have added quite a bit.”

I only caught bits and pieces of the show because I had to work on a project after spending a good chunk of the day dealing with house issues. Glad I saw the tribute. IMO, Meryl’s toned down, very elegant ensemble was very appropriate for giving that presentation.

Those of you who didn’t care for Gaga - what was it that you didn’t like? This would be a case that I have to wonder if you didn’t know who it was, and you listened without looking visually, would you have thought her better???

Her singing was excellent. Admit I got distracted by the body art. But am glad she took off the batman gloves and dress with wings.

It struck me that the films that women were nominated for Best Actress for were rather obscure. For the 5 women, only one of those films was nominated for Best Picture (Theory of Everything). For the men it was 4 out of 5. There were 8 films nominated for Best Picture.

Last year 3 of the 5 women nominated for Best Actress had their respective films nominated for Best Picture. For the men it was 5 out of 5. There were 9 films nominated for Best Picture.

Just more fuel for Patricia Arquette here that good roles for women are not so available.

I’m glad Patricia Arquette won best supporting actress. One of my favorite female actresses and totally underrated.

I’ve liked here since True Romance (1993)…
