Oscars 2019

Did any of you see Selma Blair in her dress? I thought she looked gorgeous. I guess I hadn’t heard about her MS diagnosis. She’s apparently got a really positive outlook and was just relieved to finally find out what was wrong so she could formulate a plan of attack.

Nrdsb4 - she believes she’s had it for over a decade! She has a great attitude. She’s had a lot of hardships over the years - addiction, depression etc. - I find her strength amazing.

I saw both The Wife and The Favorite and while I thought Olivia Coleman’s performance was quite good, I would have voted for Glen Close. Her performance in The Wife was superb! Agree with those who think GC was shortchanged. I liked Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me, but her performance wasn’t at the Academy award level.

I would have liked to see Lady Gaga win , Glenn Close was my second choice. I was surprised that Glenn Close did not win.

I was kind of surprised Crazy Rich Asians wasn’t nominated for anything. I wasn’t expecting best picture, but maybe Adapted Screenplay, Set Design, Costume Design, etc…

Glenn Close is becoming the Susan Lucci of the Oscar biz.

Maybe Glenn Close will be nominated and win next year! I really expected her to win…

AFAIK, she’s not attached to any films that are completed or in post-production (or currently in production or pre-production for that matter), so that’s unlikely. Taylor Swift has a better chance of being nominated for Cats.

Oh wow, I had no idea Selma Blair’s illness was so advanced. But her attitude and courage are absolutely awe inspiring.

Just saw The Favourite today, I am not a fan. I love Olivia Coleman, but I don’t think she deserved the Oscar. I really think Glenn Close was cheated this year, and that is too bad. I also finally saw Green Book, so that was the last of the nominees I hadn’t seen. I liked all the pictures except Black Panther wasn’t my cup of tea. I think the Oscar should have gone to Roma, but we know the controversy with that. . So, of the others, I think it should have been Black Klansman. It wasn’t my favorite though. That would be Bohemian Rhapsody. I loved the story, never bored, but the music is what made it. Don’t think it should win because of that. Just my 2 cents today.

Watched “The Favorite” on the plane this weekend. I love historical fiction and period movies, costume dramas, etc. so I expected to love it. OMG, worst movie I have seen in years! (And I was in 1st class, with my fancy headphones and wine in hand, so the plane venue wasn’t a factor ).

I saw The Favorite last week and loved the costumes and acting, but after I watched it told DH, “That was weird.” We both watched Green Book over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it; I hadn’t realized how funny it would be. We watched A Star is Born a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it but didn’t think it was anything special (plus I still like the Judy Garland version best). Saw The Black Panther when it came out. As a Marvel fan, it wasn’t my favorite movie but well made and original. DS took us to SpiderMan: Into the Spiderverse over the holidays and I was enthralled with the animation. This is probably more Oscar nominees than I normally see. I wait to watch the depressing movies until they’re free ;).

The trailer for The Favorite looks intriguing. But enough of you here have completely panned it, so I guess I won’t waste my money.

I loved The Favourite, but it’s a very mannered movie. I don’t mind a little post-modernism in my movies, there are some deliberate anachronisms. It’s not a cozy little historical picture. I totally get why people hate it.

Also loved the Favourite. The set design and wardrobes alone are worth the price of (matinee?) admission.
