my two favorite wins: Diablo Cody and the song from “Once”

Ditto on the song from “Once.” It reminded us of how much we liked that movie.

I also enjoyed learning about Gaydolf Titler.

What is the appeal of No Country?

To me the best moment of the evening was when Jon Stewart graciously ushered back the young musician who’d just co-won an Oscar but had been orchestra’ed off the stage because her partner spoke a bit long, although very charmingly.

After the commercial, Stewart made sure she got her moment, which she devoted to encouraging all newly starting artists not to give up.

A good host makes all his guests feel welcome.

I also like the designer briefcases that the Price-Waterhouse accountants carried on the Red Carpet.

that was hilarious!

I want to rent Once this week, as we’re heading off to Ireland/Northern Ireland in a couple of weeks (of course, I’m also trying to get through Uris’ Trinity, so I don’t know if I have time for both!)

P3T - I enjoyed that moment, too; completely caught me off guard.

To me, “No Country for Old Men” is “Fargo - Texas.”

I thought No Country was just kill, kill, kill with no humor.
I haven’t seen it.

Is there more to No Country than kill, kill, kill?

I have not seen this movie but I like the movie star. His accent is sexier than Antonio.:)

S#2 and I tried to count the dead bodies after leaving the movie last Friday night and gave up - too many, too fast to count.

SO glad Marion Cotillard won best actress. Her portrayal of Edith Piaf was stunning.

But I’m sorry that Julie Christie didn’t win. I thought her performance was shattering. (I do agree that Cotillard did a superb job as Piaf, though.)

I don’t know if it was just me, but I had practically no interest in the Oscars this year. Of all the major awards, the only one representing even a hint of a surprise was Tilda Swinton. (And what was up with that? It was a fine performance, but awfully slight for a Best Supporting Actress, especially up against Cate Blanchett’s amazing Dylan impersonation. I didn’t get any of the noms for Michael Clayton, which was about the 10th best movie I saw this year.) Marion Cotillard vs. Julie Christy and Big Macho Epic vs. Little Macho Epic did not equal suspense. Daniel Day-Lewis and Diablo Cody could have asked for theirs to be mailed to them, as could the Blood cinematographer and the Coens for Best Adapted Screenplay. And Hansard/Urklova? The competition was so weak that they were up against THREE songs from the same movie, none of which was even remotely memorable apart from its staging.

Most of the banter was “eh”. Stewart was OK, but misfired a lot. I liked Seth Rogen and Josh Whatever arguing over who was more like Halle Berry the first time, but then they did it again.

I didn’t even see any really awful clothes. Nicole Kidman’s necklace looked wrong, but I thought that was just a mistake, not intentional.

Tilda Swinton’s dress was unique, kinda like a potato sack is unique.

Maybe I just don’t get fashion.

I think it was the lowest rated Academy Awards show in decades.

[Academy Awards’ ratings were a dud for 2008 - Flint, Michigan Entertainment News - The Flint Journal MLive.com](Academy Awards' ratings were a dud for 2008 - mlive.com)

One of Stewart’s best lines was when he was wondering if there was a need for hugs in Hollywood. He remarked on the trend of movies in 2007 to be so violent, hesitated, and said, “Thank God for teen-aged pregnancy.”

There were no fewer than three decent 2007 movies that revolved around unplanned pregnancy: Juno, Knocked Up, and Waitress. But they were all different! In one, she got the guy, not the baby. In one, she got the guy AND the baby. And in the last she got the baby, not the guy. Aren’t we glad indie movies are soooooo creative?

lol…

I agree completely with JHS’s earlier comment, particularly about Cate Blanchett.

I am with teriwtt in her favorite wins and I will add The Counterfeiters which I saw on Saturday. It was brilliant beyond belief.

Agree about Tilda Swinton and Michael Clayton.

Who cares about the movies? I like the clothes!
