What are your thoughts on the two schools? Specifically, I’d like to hear about their foreign language departments, since I plan on studying Chinese and Linguistics, but even if you don’t know about anything more than the schools’ reputations as a whole, go ahead and give me your feedback.

Ohio State is a title VI national resource center for East Asian Studies. Only about a dozen American universities will gain this designation for each region. This means that in addition to the language departments, the university needs have great depth in resources throughout the social sciences and humanities as well a strong depth of library resources in primary documents.

Both schools are strong in East Asian languages and related area studies. OSU is the designated National Resource Center for East Asian Languages. [The National East Asian Languages Resource Center](http://nealrc.osu.edu)
OSU also has a Chinese Flagship Program, which will provide opportunities for Chinese language training to proficiency that arguably will match any university in the country.
I don’t know how UW and OSU compare in linguistics. In foreign languages generally, however, UW has always had a strong reputation. Personally, I think Madison is a better university in a better location, though OSU is definitely on the rise and opportunities presented by the Chinese flagship program could be a tipping point.

Other Big 10 universities strong in East Asian studies include Indiana and Michigan.

I am sure you can’t go wrong for either school!! UW-Madison is generally perceived as a stronger academic institution overall imho. However, Linguistics and East Asian Languages (Chinese in particular) are TOSU’s forte. In fact, the school just recently opened up its first oversea office in Shanghai, China early the year. Best of the luck to you!
