Other forums as good as CC?

I would agree that the DIS boards are the only other one I’ve been on where there seemed to be a community feel beyond the specific topic of interest.

Some of the nicest people in the world are on the “NDE” listserv, a yahoo group. It is for people who have had near-death experiences or are interested in the phenomenon.

[nde : nde](<a href=“Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos”>Yahoo | Mail, Weather, Search, Politics, News, Finance, Sports & Videos)

Another good yahoo group is ShadowSyndromeKids, for parents of children with mild forms of neurological disorders like Asperger’s, ADD, etc.

[ShadowSyndromeKids : Mild Forms of AS,ADHD,SID,CAPD,ODD,OCD](http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ShadowSyndromeKids/)

Thanks so much to whoever suggested GradCafe!! I sent it to my DD (who is awaiting a Fellowship decision). This will hold her over for the duration of Spring Break I hope lol. There are a couple of good threads on budgeting for grad students.

I am going to check out ShadowSyndromeKids as well. DS is ‘in process’ of an official diagnosis so any info I can get I will devour.

Love this place. I have several kids, so I’m not yet done with the college thing, but even when I am, I suspect that I’ll still be coming here. I love how I can get an intelligent answer to almost ANY question. Where else can that happen?

My kids have not particularly been interested in CC, but I have found it a very helpful source as a sounding board & to get intelligent perspectives about a huge range of topics–mostly non-college-related. My kids have not wanted nor needed info from here but I find it a great community. ;)

Agree that GradCafe is super useful when applying as a grad student, especially because they have a searchable database of admitted and rejected students with their programs, numbers etc. Much easier than the constant new stats threads here.

Tripadvisor and Cruisecritic are my favorites when planning trips. I usually find the information very reliable.

If Disneyland is your focus instead of Disneyworld, I highly recommend MousePlanet. I absolutely love the people over there, and they are super nice and helpful when you are planning a trip. The group of members have helped plan and execute at least two surprise engagements. Also, everyone gets together twice a year for an Amazing Race-ish adventure through the parks called MouseAdventure, which is very addictive.

What I’m really looking for is a good blog/website for recipes that are made for one person. Too many recipes are too big or time-intensive to make for one person, so I’d love to find some forum that is good for that…

foodgawker is fun for bringing together all sorts of recipes, not sure about cooking for one, though.

I have found the chowhound boards are great, but will vary from city to city.

To paraphrase Sinead O’Connor, “…nothing compares, nothing compares to CC!”

Oops, now I have that song stuck in my head.

^that is called an “earworm” I learned today on NPR.

The only board on my list that rivals CC in terms of intelligent and informative talk is Cruise Critic. That’s another site with a lot of traffic. IMO you have to have a critical mass of active users for a board to be consistently lively and interesting.

The other board I frequent is for a niche interest. It’s tiny compared to this one, and frankly it gets boring. You get the same 15 people doing all the posting, and there are a lot of folks who seldom contribute more than “Me too.”

CC has been great for many topics, even well beyond college topics.

For a diversion during cruise planning, I’ve liked cruisecritic site. There is general info as well as threads targeted at a specific ship/sailing. Some energetic members are arranging group land cruises that are less expensive than those offered by the cruise company.

hometalkentertainment.com
Been going on that message board for years. Sent some from there over to here when they had college questions. Great group of mostly women (we’d love it if more men joined). There is a board for general fluff, gardening, politics, and interior design.

Mine has never logged on to CC. This forum started after they graduated. There was another informal forum prior to CC, the name escapes me now. I think all those members whose join dates are Aug 2004 were members of that forum.
