I have never tried an alternative to cows milk.
Soy, almond, coconut?
Your input is welcome. Thanks.
I don’t care for milk or milk substitutes but my kids much prefer almond and coconut to soy.
Yes, I’ve tried all. They are OK, but different. The Soy milk cases from Costco would “curdle” and have chunks before you finished the carton. That was annoying. If you have a thyroid condition, you’re supposed to limit soy, so we stopped drinking it.
Rice milk was ok but seemed rather “thin.”
Almond milk didn’t taste like almonds to me, but did have its own flavor.
Coconut milk (different from coconut water) is rich and generally used for curries, cooking and desserts. It had a out of calories. I can’t imagine drinking it.
We’ve switched to water. H us lactose intolerant. I think rice milk would probably be my 2nd choice (after water), but when I was in menopause, I liked soy milk for any flavonoid benefits I could get.
I’ve tried them all. I don’t like milk (I only use it in cereal) but I disliked the alternatives even more.
My mom, on the other hand, loves almond milk and it has replaced cow’s milk for her.
Almond milk works well for me. It almost tastes like vanilla. The consistency is a lot thinner than cow’s milk, but once I got used to it, I preferred it.
I only drink almond, cashew, coconut or some blend of those. I prefer them to cow’s milk.
I was vegan for a while. My favorite on cereal was vanilla rice milk. I wasn’t ever a big milk drinker so mostly I just used it on cereal, and occasionally in baking or something.
I put milk in my coffee. I use coconut milk in some curries. I don’t like fake milk. The ones I’ve tasted are all too sweet. I don’t eat regular cereal. If I have muesli or granola (rarely) I have it with yogurt.
I switched to unsweetened coconut milk in my daily steel cut oats and do not miss cows milk at all. I just wanted to decrease my consumption of animal products. I was surprised by how much I like it. Be sure to purchase unsweetened milk…
@mathmom - You should try unsweetened almond milk. It has to be labeled “unsweetened”. The “original” has sugar added.
I don’t like milk bu do use unsweetened vanilla flavored almond milk in my breakfast smoothies and it works great.
Definitely the unsweetened ones. The sweetened ones are too sweet.
Since I’m not lacto-intolerant, I’m happy to drink milk. I just have the other ones at other people’s houses.
For my coffee I like almond and coconut milk and for cooking definitely coconut milk. I only buy cow’s milk for my S who does drink quite a bit of it.
I drink fat free milk but now I am confused because they are now reporting that we should be drinking whole milk.
For those who commented on coconut milk for cooking and not seeing it as drinkable, there are 2 kinds of coconut milk, the thick cooking kind and one with a regular milk consistency that comes in a milk carton.
I cannot stand anything but 2% milk. Call me spoiled.
I do prefer kefir and yogurts and farmer cheeses to plain milk., but when it comes to coffee, gimme 2% milk, and no one will be harmed.
I have never liked cow’s milk-as a little kid it was a constant battle to get me to drink it. As an adult I discovered unsweetened almond milk. I love the light, refreshing taste of it. I don’t like the sweetened version either.
i grew up on full-fat raw milk and it was the best. i feel sorry for people who have only ever had skim.
soy, almond, coconut … blech. you can buy it, drink it, cook with it, even enjoy it, just don’t call it milk.
Lactose intolerant here. I tried soy, but had some health problems when I drank a lot of it. Switched to almond milk, it is working well. Except for the lectures from D2 on how much water it takes to grow almond for it…
