My daughter is intrigued by the Baylor University Scholars program and it made us wonder what other colleges might have something similar. Baylor’s program seems somewhat unique in that Scholars don’t have to fulfill the typical gen-ed requirements and are free to take a variety of courses from a variety of departments. Most honors programs seem like they simply tack on additional work to traditional classes and that is not necessarily what she is looking for.
She is most interested in languages (Spanish currently, also interested in Korean and others), mathematics, and cellular biology but also has interest in computer programming, guitar/music, art, and literature.
My daughter will likely be a National Merit Semi-finalist (SI 223 from IA) and earned a 35 on the ACT last year.
Thank you for any suggestions! Bonus points if the program is at a Christian college or university, though we’re happy to entertain all options.
@iahomeschoolmom We found an interesting honors program at Anderson University in SC. Very small Christian school. Another top notch Christian school with an interdisciplinary approach is The King’s College in NYC.
Fordham University (Jesuit, NYC) has an honors program which has an integrated core curriculum which is different from the rest of the school. Not quite the same as Baylor, but may be worth a look. The school has nice scholarships for NMSF (I think full tuition)
-The Gallatin School at NYU allows students to take courses across a variety of disciplines/schools and develop a course of individualized study.
-Sarah Lawrence College has no formal majors, and instead each student works closely with faculty to develop and complete their own concentration or program of study.
Neither of these are Christian colleges and would likely be vey different environments than Baylor, but they might be worth checking out anyway.
