Other than portfolio

I am going to apply for a graphic design BFA at a few art colleges and universities.I heard that apart from the portfolio the colleges look at extra-curiculars and recommendation letters.I’m an international student,I’m having a hard time preparing to apply because I cant go to portfolio days etc.
Normally what do colleges look for aside high-grades,good portfolio?
I am thinking of getting a recommendation letter from my art director at my internship studio.

So far,

I’ve had an exhibition in a few cities
I’ve done an internship
and I’ve been featured in a magazine and a newspaper.

What else should I do?

Thanks,

I looked through your portfolio and I’m sure that you’ll be able to get into a pretty good school with what you have, although I would advise doing a bit more identity work. I’ve been to Portfolio Day and what they want are identity, type and layouts. (To be more precise, Art Center) However, other schools want to see your ability to draw as well, so try to have that covered by working on still-lifes and maybe some figures. But the bulk of the work should be the design stuff. Just read through what’s written on each school’s website. They usually have guides in regards to what they want.

Good luck with your application!

I find your pieces very interesting and intriguing. There’s a story telling element in some of the images that I think surpasses a lot of work by entering freshmen students. Don’t try to second guess what sort of images they are looking for and just apply to places that look interesting to you.

However, I would say in general most schools are looking for some strong examples of traditional drawing technique (not on computer), charcoal/pencil on paper and some strong examples of images drawn from life. Definitely get those letters of recommendation and send them.

You didn’t mention where you are thinking of applying or your financial situation but I would think that even a top school like RISD would find your work interesting especially since they are making a serious move into computer generated imagery. So if a school looks appealing to you just apply.

I would disagree with rotoscope a bit, I have found that it’s a very wide range of messages from the different schools and I think that your pieces are strong enough that you shouldn’t worry too much about producing layouts or anything of that sort. Just make sure you have some images that aren’t computer generated but produced on paper or canvas as a lot of schools aren’t as advanced and up to date regarding computer generated images. I think personally that they are lagging behind the field in this regard but that’s the way it is.

By the way I love your letter T and Pain images, very sophisticated approach to typography.
