Others here who are applying for Fall 2017?

@MSMead - fingers still crossed for you.

Congrats to @cougheedog, @2kidsinky, @reformedman, and @asinineayo!

@dbjs70 Thanks. I’d like my son to enroll but it’ll all depend on the financial aid package, we are still waiting. The presidential scholarship was much appreciated regardless.

S got admitted to Computer Engineering received via regular mail last Friday, never checked the portal.
SAT 1360 w/ 700 math
28 Act
A lot of AP course and Extra Curriculars
Have another kid at RIT for EE if i recall we received the scholarship info about a week after admission notification.

@mommabear67 notice your drexel icon. What is the connection? My son got into both and we are trying to decide between the two. Motion Picture Science at RIT and Animation/Visual Effects at Drexel. Would love some insight. We have not been to Drexel. Going for April 8th admitted day. Been to RIT several times. We live in NC but husband and I went to RIT. Thanks.

When can I expect my portal to update?

The letter arrived and it did not say declined but offered 5 other colleges within RIT to choose. So technically he was declined for Engineering. Oh well. He will not be attending RIT. I was getting a bit nervous anyway due to the tuition. One more school to hear from. Good luck everyone on financial aid and school selection!

@MSMead Sorry to hear that, good luck to your son wherever he chooses! We are STILL waiting…ugh.

@MSMead, sorry to hear, but I am glad you have several remaining choices! Best of luck to your son wherever he ends up choosing to go!

Portal still hasn’t updated to say I was accepted but financial aid finally showed up today. Got a good scholarship, but after aid my estimated cost is $37,000. Not sure RIT is worth over $140,000 in private loans. :open_mouth:

@robmarync watch the costs at Drexel in some of the engineering programs you pay tuition during coop at least it was a couple years ago when my other kids were thinking of going there. They got about 28k scholarship and it was still too expensive. I think cost of attendance was $69k 3 yrs ago.

RIT, at least, does not charge tuition while students are on co-op.

Drexel does not charge tuition on co-op, but they do charge a fee, $790.

Quick update regarding my son’s admission. He emailed admissions about not being offered ME. They told him they had 1600 applicants for 130 slots just for Mechanical Engineering 8% acceptance rate!! I would’ve thought that such a large university would have at least 300-400 in ME. They offered him several other engineering options: chemical, electrical, microelectronic and engineering exploration. For future applicants, if your not certain about ME then do not pick ME as it is extremely competitive. We ran into this at Penn State UP as well. He was offered Behrend campus for ME but if he had chosen general engineering he would have been offered University Park.

My son knows that he wants ME (as much as an 18 year old can know this…). Would it be wrong for him to go as Engineering Exploration knowing he’ll just choose ME as his major after 1 year?

@MSMead - Are they guaranteed their first choice after 1 year? Some schools make them give 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice and then they are placed based on GPA or have a minimum GPA requirement for guaranteed first choice. I would just make sure it is clear what needs to happen so he can transfer into ME.

@MSMead-was your son accepted into engineering exploration in his acceptance to RIT letter that denied him acceptance to ME? My son was put on waitlist for Computer Science (good scores and decent grades) and offered an alternative not in the school of CS. Wondering if he emails admissions he can see if CS exploration is an option? Did your son email Engineering school or general admissions?

Also, anyone know what the chances are of being moved off the waitlist and into the school and if that will happen before May 1st or after?

His letter said that ME was full they had over 1600 applicants but they felt he would do well at RIT and gave him a list of other options on another page and said they needed to know asap. Engineering Exploration was not listed so he emailed them (they gave a special email address in the letter). The answer was that Engineering exploration was definitely an option along with Chemical, Industrial etc. He has decided not to attend RIT because he really just wants ME and finding a side way in seemed like he was forcing it.

I still have not received anything… I applied on-time on common app. Would that be a possible reason for the delay?

Finally got his admission letter! He was waitlisted for computer science but accepted into computer security, his second choice. Not sure if he wants this as he has other options. No word on $ yet either.

I lurk on here but don’t post, but have some questions. My son got admitted yesterday to an alternative major also. He applied to Game Design and was offered Computer Engineering. He was excited and wants to visit but I have been doing some research and they seem vastly different. It appears that Computer Engineering is a coop program - is that correct? So, 5 years mandatory with co-op opportunities after 2 years? Is it easy to switch majors if it is too hardware based?

@momofboyz Game Design is closer to Computer Science than Computer Engineering is. Computer Engineering is about designing circuits and some programming is involved. I would dare say even ‘little’ programming is involved for the most part. Game Design has it’s largest part in programming so Computer Programming or as it’s generally called, Computer Science seems more what he wants. They may have offered him Computer Engineering because they didn’t have enough positions opened to him as the previous post by MSMead also stated for his son and Mechanical Engineering.

You may want to have your son research all of these above listed majors to see which one strikes his fancy most.

With regard to your other questions, I am unsure. Perhaps someone else can answer. Goodluck to you and your son.
