In a previous thread, a poster mentioned the Ott-Lite. Now we’ve seen it in BB&B and it looks like a really good product. Do others have experience with this lamp?

All my quilting buddies use Ott-Lites because the colors of their fabrics are truer than under a regular bulb.

They are great! Expensive, but worth it. If you don’t need one right away, places like JoAnn Fabrics will have them 50% off sometimes.

Bethievt,
Are you looking at this for your S’s dorm room? We have been looking all over for a lamp for my D. So far no luck but I think she may really like the look of this. Thanks for the tip - we’ll take a trip to BB&B to see it in person. You may have solved our lamp issue! We looked at the one from Sharper Image recommended in an earlier thread but it was too heavy and bulky.
Good luck with the dorm shopping!

I would swear by the ott-lite (I quilt). Go to Joanns.com and get it online with the 40% off online coupon. The bulbs are expensive in comparison to a regular 60 watt, but I have used my ottlite for hours a day and only changed the bulb after 2 years. Use another 40% coupon to get a replacement bulb!! I think the bulbs are around 15$, but I could be wrong.

It is a space saver. It opens up like in the pic to light up, and you turn it off by closing it.

Thanks–it does look like a really good dorm light. My son reads–a lot–late at night. I would easily pay a bit more for a good light.

I have two - a floor model and a table top one. I got the tabletop one at a Costco a couple years ago. The floor model has a heavy box like thing at the plug (I think it’s a transformer) so that adds weight. Quality of light is good for handwork and I would imagine for reading, too.

JoAnn’s is having a sale on Ott-Light Desk lamps:

Does anyone know what the difference is between these and “full spectrum” lights? Are they the same?

I’m wondering the same because they claim some benefits for SAD depression.

I think the Ott-Lites have full spectrum, but not as much light output as the large arrays used for SAD alleviation. For those lights, which are about 2ft. square, you sit in front of them for a short time each day, like maybe 30 minutes. Using an Ott-Lit for lots of hours daily may have the same effect.

According to the ad that came in our paper, these lights are on sale at the store, also. Think I’ll see if DD wants to go look at it.

I just bought one for my son. If he doesn’t end up liking it, I think I will. I can always get him something else later.

I was on the BB&B website looking at the Ott Lite and saw this other one called Verilux—anyone have any experience with that one?

I have an Ott Light and I don’t think it’s very bright! It seems like it should be, but it isn’t.

I bought my son two nice lamps for his dorm room freshman year. Neither one lasted into the second semester. One he “loaned out” and never got back (?!) and the other one was broken. :(

Thanks for the recommendation! A bright light at a desk or bedside that is small and portable. Bought one last night at JoAnn’s for $39.99.

Verilux manufactures something called an Ott-lite. In addition to the one at JoAnns’ that looks like a princess phone, there are two other Verilux models we saw. They weren’t on sale, and cost around $79 as I recall. The other models had a steel-core gooseneck to twist and aim the light; also a choice between a larger desktop base than Joann’s, or a small C-clamp. I saw all 3 displayed at a fancy lighting shop. I thought the gooseneck might have advantage for reading in bed, but for desk work I bet it’s fine to have the stationary light as Joann’s deal halves the price this week.

Advantages of all 3 of these:very long life to the manufacturer-only light bulbs; cool fluorescent doesn’t heat up; clear task lighting.

Disadvantage: cost; there are other task lamps starting at $10. The saleslady said it’s NOT useful for SAD, seasonal affective disorder.

I splurged and got him an Ott-lamp, however.

I believe that Verilux and Ott-Lite are two different manufacturers.

The Ott-Lite portable that’s marked down at Jo-Ann’s uses a 13 watt bulb. My son felt it wasn’t bright enough so we’re returning it (or I may keep it just for sewing).

The Verilux has a portable desk lamp which is 27 watts, which should do the trick, and which we just ordered.

^^thanks for that clarification (bad pun, sorry)
