My DH and I have noticed that we are 1) missing out on discussions about current films and 2) have free time Saturday mornings, so we have a New Year’s Resolution to see a movie each week.
We have seen (of course ) Star Wars, then last week was a tremendous hit with “Darkest Hour” , and today was " The Post". Three fantastic movies!
What are you seeing and liking?
We saw “The Greatest Showman” yesterday. We always say we should to to the movies more often but it’s just easier to stay home. [retired]
@dragonmom Saw the Post. Good but not better than All the President’s Men. Wonder with Julia Roberts is excellent. Molly’s Game has great dialogue. 3 Billboards deserves the acting awards. BTW, suggest each of you get the Movie Pass app. Unlimited movies for $10/month per person once a day.
It’s my goal as well to see more movies. I bought the MoviePass in December when Costco was running a special. Haven’t used it yet but am planning to go tomorrow. Hoping I don’t have any problems using the moviepass. I read some mixed reviews but decided to take a chance when offered at $89/year.
Great idea! D gave DH the Movie Pass. Not sure how it works, but hopefully it makes it cheaper to see a movie a week!
@GRITS80 @mamom they mail you a debit MasterCard. You download the app on your phone. You must be 100 yards of the box office to search and select the showtime. Click the time you want and then have 30 minutes to retrieve tix. easy as pie. can be used once daily. normally no blackouts. opening nights available.
I have friends who do date night to the movies every Tuesday when theaters offer half-price tix. They pick their movie for the week on Sunday, and go out for a quick bite before the show.
What a great idea!
Oh, I like this. I also resolved to see more movies this year (one of the few resolutions I’m likely to keep!), but “one a week” puts some practicality into it. I’m going to borrow your thought, if you don’t mind!
This long weekend I’ll see three in three days: last night was The Post, today Three Billboard, and tomorrow The Shape of Water. (The first two with friends; I haven’t been able to talk anyone into seeing TSOW with me. It’s weird, I know, but maybe my kind of weird.)
I’ve also seen Star Wars, Darkest Hour, and Lady Bird. I should be pretty well prepped for the Oscars. Also on my list: Mudbound and The Square.
I just saw The Phantom Thread… Daniel Day Lewis’ supposed final movie performance. I really, really liked it. I’m dying to talk to someone about it, so PM me if you have and want to exchange ideas!
Final movie?! Oh no…
Yup, he claims he is retiring.
I could not find a movie a week I’d want to go see in the theater. They come in bursts (awards season), but there are long stretches of movie wasteland, IMHO.
But there is a lot of good backlist out there. I have a social group that has a movie night at someone’s house once a month. We set a theme and people bring movies they own or list ones streaming we could watch. We bring food, too.
Last week was the theme “Based on a true story”, and we had over 30 movies to choose from! We vote and watch whatever the group decides.
Movie wasteland, yup.
I don’t know if some will understand this, but saw The Post today and at the end wanted to cry and rage at how we’ve wimped out in recent years, if not decades, have become complacent and seem unable to effectively stand up for the right positive change(s.)
