Our review: thumbs down

if you scroll down in that article, it then does make that point and shows crimes / students. But I agree, that list seems useless too.

Thank you for posting! Rochester has been near the top of D25’s list and I’ve been pushing it as a possible ED. This is child #3 so not our first rodeo, and all schools have their weaknesses, so I appreciate the detailed info that can really help parents make an informed decision.

DavidRoman- I really appreciate this honest feedback. U of R is on our list for D who is interested in schools strong in math/music and maybe psychology/neuroscience. U of R checks a lot of boxes but we just aren’t willing to compromise safety. We have ruled out schools directly in NYC & Philadelphia (we’ve lived in both places).

It’s nice to hear your son has made good friends there. Best of luck to both of your kids and thanks again for the honesty.

Thank you for saying that. I can see why U of R would be attractive as math/music and pysch/neuroscience are all in their wheelhouse.

In the last two weeks, there has been an enormous thread on the U of R Parents facebook page. A few kids have been assaulted while walking across the main river footbridge from U of R to the main offcampus living area. Many parents delurking to tell their stories and share their frustration, worry, and concern. It has reinforced my belief that I’m glad my S25 will be out of there in 8 months. There’s talk of a petition to demand better security from the school.

I don’t want to come off as a one-note U of R basher but realize that that resource is not available to those who aren’t current parents and I promise you, it’s an eye-opening read.

Wow this is all very upsetting. I’m so sorry for the emotional trauma this must be causing. What I really am taking note of is the university’s response, or lack thereof.

I’m so sorry your son has had a rough experience. I confess to going over to facebook to see what I’ve been missing. My son has a great experience - his only brush with crime was someone stealing the light off his bike. Now he did also chose to remain on campus until this year, so that may color his exposure to incidents outside the campus bubble. He has mentioned car break ins, so know that is an issue.

I think the social aspect of your post surprised me the most. My son was a pretty hard core introvert in high school and I really wondered how the transition would go - he’s blossomed at University of Rochester. I’d say he’s had a robust social life and really has since freshman year. I’m really sorry that’s not true for your son, as I do think it make such a huge difference.

Best of luck to your son and the college search for your younger child!

My child is having an amazing time at U of R, she bloomed nicely. I do follow FB and see the concerns and talk to her often but she is not bothered. I thought these incidents are normal in and around universities. Since she is my oldest, I don’t have any comparison. Education is top notch, she found work, research easily. She is connected with most of the professors. Have many friends. For an introvert, I am very happy with her progress.

Thanks for sharing this. We have a musician considering a possible dual-degree at Eastman/Rochester. Obviously, this would include getting to the UR campus; is that safe? Is Eastman itself in what sounds like as bad of a spot?

My musician (and me) really didn’t love the area or find it safe. One opinion but it turned us off. He LOVED the music school and in particular one of the guitar prof’s but couldn’t get past Rochester.

My daughter is a Freshman at Eastman and goes back and forth to UofR on a regular basis for the gym. The UofR shuttle between campuses is safe and easy. Eastman is downtown, and she has not felt unsafe, but she is intentionally vigilant to keep her head on a swivel, not walk alone at night, carry pepper spray, etc. Eastman is truly a world-class music school and she loves it so far!
