My son would like to attend a CSU that offers a visual arts curriculum. What are his chances for being accepted? He has a 3.1 GPA and hs not yet taken the SAT/ACT. We are not looking to establish residency for tuition purposes. CSUSJ, CSUSF, CSUSD have some programs we would like to consider. What is the formula for accepting out of state kids. Thank you.

Unfortunately, for applicants outside the service area of these particular CSUs admission to impacted programs, which I believe include Visual Arts, is very competitive and with a GPA of 3.1 admission to SJSU, CSUSF and CSUSD is very unlikely.

We live in Sacramento County and my son who also had a GPA of 3.1 and SAT scores of CR 660 and M 720 was rejected this year when he applied to CSU Sacramento as a Physics major, which is not impacted, and will have to attend community college and try to transfer to a UC or CSU as a junior.

If your son wants to go to school in California, and is out-of-state, you might want to research some of our private art schools. Here’s a few you might take a look at:

San Francisco Academy of Art
The Art Institute of California (Various Locations)
Los Angeles Film School

I don’t know anything about these schools regarding prestige, admission chances, or academic rigor, so you might want to do a little bit of digging. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to apply to the afore-mentioned state schools, as out-of-state tuition might still be cheaper than these schools.
