Hi-
D is a perfect candidate for Penn State academically. 4.4GPA 2000 SAT great EC and leadership, musically talented etc… We can’t afford the $40k price tag for OOS. Any realistic chance of getting money from Penn State, or should we take it off our list?

The most you can expect to see from PSU is about $3500 per year if she gets into Schreyer Honors College. PSU is NOT known for its generosity with FA for IS or OOS students. Good luck.

4.4 GPA and 2000 SAT will make her eligible for some of the smaller academic grants PSU has (I think there was one for 1500 and maybe one other) that I received and I had lower SAT scores. Depending on which college she applies for they may award her some more $$. The College of Ag I know gives out a lot of money to their freshmen. Other colleges give out more money once you declare end of sophomore year.

hhhmmm…my daughter is OOS, first year College of Ag - Food Science - we received what seems like the typical $5500 loan package, applied for AG scholarships and was told they weren’t being disbursed to freshmen this year…

Are these academic grants for OOS Applicants as well?

Is this the Stafford Loan? Stafford loans are provided by the Federal government and are not FA from PSU. IMHO Federal loans shouldn’t even be considered financial aid. Good luck getting any scholarships or grants from PSU.

ccaseys, that is surprising, I know my freshmen year (I was college of AG then), the college of Ag was really proud that they were giving so much money to freshmen. I guess money is tight now though. The one grant is called the academic competitiveness grant, I’m not sure if OOS students can receive it or not.

Stafford loans are nice, if they are the subsidized version.

yes, I was surprised as well that we didn’t receive anything - just in food science alone, there was a list of at least 100 different scholarships. The Stafford loan we did receive was half subsidized and half not. Penn State’s not cheap and she received many much better scholarships (both merit and need based) from many other schools, so we’re hoping that she can see some of that $$ in her sophomore year
I have to say that she is in love with Penn State and is very happy so we’re off to a good start
