out of state

I am from MA and was drawn to UMD b/c of the reputation, research opportunities and the new physics department. Will it be a mistake if I go b/c I have a feeling it will be filled with *******s from MD. No to say that Maryland sucks, but it seems that maybe a lot of dumb asses from MD will get in b/c it is a state school. I am afraid that these kids don’t deserve it and will tend to only socialize with Maryland natives. If this is the case, I will just go to UMASS.

hmm. Just from your post, I think you may just want to stick with the snobs in MA.

If you want to open your mind and go to a great school, there aren’t too many dumb***es in general hanging around the physics dept. at UMD.

Stay in MA, please. MD is a great school, and you should leave the spot for someone who will appreciate it.

I’m not sure about the rest of the posters, but I think THIS was a dumbass move. Seriously, why would you post to a forum of your potential peers and tell THEM that you think they’re not good enough for you. Think before you type!

Don’t go to Maryland. We’re very discriminatory against dbags. Clearly you won’t fit in.

lol twit. i’m OOS and i am looking forward to (most likely) going to UMd. i hope this thread was maybe some kind of a joke…

Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure it was a joke, but not a good one.

lol!! astrophysicsmom, twit and SmajoHurko u all are funnyyy!
and mackeenca, you’re a ■■■■■■ and there was no point in posting that if you’re not goin to maryland…

GO TERPS!!!

well, smajorhurko, I looked at his(?) previous posts… this one was pretty much in character with all his other posts. Yep, stay in MA, please.

also, mckeena, you are only encourgaing the stereotype of the snobby, private school, look-down-your-nose-at-me east-coast resident that is rampant here in Ohio and elsewhere between the two coasts.

anyway my hat goes off to you for making yourself look like a complete a-hole.

lol OP, you’re one to talk. Take a look at YOUR state school then come back here to talk about dumb asses.

As of 2009, Maryland is the wealthiest state in the whole nation. (It was Connecticut last year.)
Having wealthy people means having more educated people and more funds to spend on education.

Not only is it the wealthiest, but many of the profs at UMD have been at one time or another involved with the govt. You want physics…well let’s see, there is a poster here that their DD will be doing a UMD internship at NASA in MD. (I think that would look great on any resume) Than add into the fact that companies like Lockheed/Boeing, Northrop, Raytheon and Rand are littered all over the area and a quick metro ride from the campus. As a Physicist major, these are all companies that need people like you for scientific reasons.

Look at UMD IS students, they are not the bottom of the barrel. With the economy and the stock market in its current situation, you will now see the incoming class be ranked higher and higher. Just like UMass!

The problem UMD is now facing is that their FA is so low for OOS that they are losing very qualified students b/c they can’t afford it. UMASS has never ranked as high as UMD for State Universities on USNWR.
