It protects against Black Flies? Really?
I wouldnât know. We arenât in ME during black fly season. We only use the mosquito repellent. Perhaps someone else has that experience.
I seem to be getting bit up so much already this season from SOMETHING that I feel like Iâd pay some big bucks to get rid of ANY and all bugs!!!
Thermacells are great! and I think/hope they would be much more environmentally friendly than any spray which I do not like to use. I hunt and the bugs can be terrible but the Thermacell keeps them awayâŠ
Many may not realize that California lacks the prevalence of flying insects seen in other parts of the country. While we may see mosquitoes occasionally, theyâre generally not a problem for me at home, particularly in the Bay Area.
I vividly recall my first encounter with black flies. Attending a wedding in Vermont over Memorial Weekend, we were greeted by swarms of these insects as we arrived at the hotel. Unsure of what they were, we soon learnedâŠThe outdoor reception, held beneath a tent, became a battleground against these pests. Afterward, I counted 47 bites on my legs and elsewhere, with the marks taking a full two weeks to fade away.
I am so glad we donât have to live with these flies in CA.
Note that the Thermocell comes in two versionsâone is rechargeable and other is not. One uses pads that are heated while the rechargeable comes with a oil in a container that gets heated. Same idea but the pads will dry out and need to be replaced even if not fully used while the oil can be saved for later use. The newer recharge versions also have a greater range of protection.
Solar lights for the yard can be adapted easily in many cases to light up a porch or indoor spaces. Once charged up you can take off the yard spike (depending on design), turn them upside down if they have a flat top (theyâll light immediately) and place them where ever needed for light. Some give a really pretty light depending on glass pattern. We used them extensively for emergency purposes.
The thermacell is discounted to $38 this weekend on Amazon using 24MEMDAY (per NYT Wirecutter)

Love my hummingbird feeder camera! https://a.co/d/5ohyDnK
The hummingbirds (and other birds) also love the vessel bubbler fountain. Had to Macgyver a way to keep clumsy dogs and annoying raccoons from knocking it over. That area is outside the kitchen window and planted with pollinator flowers.
DH decided we needed to upgrade to the 9-hour, so he ordered two (one of our 5-hour units was behaving âiffyâ last season) at 4PM. They were delivered before 8PM! Must have been fulfilled from the local Amazon warehouse. Now we need to fit them into our one checked luggage bag to Maine next week. (Perhaps he could have just ordered them to the Maine addressâŠ? I doubt the chipmunks would have run off with them.)
I ordered a thermacell too. I feel like Iâm in âthe cool kid club.â
I also got the 9 hr and the 40 hr refills. I ordered from Amazon yesterday morning before I left for work and it was already on my doorstep when I got home. We donât really have mosquitos yet, but I look forward to using it when they inevitably arrive!
Thanks again for the recommendation!
I can report that the Thermacell works great at the peak of bug season in the Maine woods. I would recommend getting it going a few minutes before you need it.
