Does the therma work say outdoors at a picnic table?

Yes, that’s kinda the point of it. It clears a 15-20’ radius anywhere outdoors. High wind is a problem but, under normal conditions, it’s meant to be used around tents, picnic tables, porches, campfires, lakes, hunting blinds, sporting events, etc.–anywhere you’re stationary and there are mosquitos (or any other flying pest that the repellent is designed for). Thermacell even provides a belt clip for portability.

How long do the refills last?

This is the refill I bought - haven’t burned yet though to know how accurate the posted hours are

Oh darn, I failed to order a refill
off I go to see if the sale is still on

We’re in Maine! First evening cocktails on the porch sans mosquitos compliments of Thermacell.

I want to get a thermacell for our neighborhood lake picnics and happy hours
but we have one neighbor with some very significant lung issues, and he wants to know what exactly is put out that keeps the little bugs away. If it’s going to be harmful to him, I won’t get it.

It’s great, isn’t it? I’m so happy we got one. Glad you’re back in Maine!

Does anyone know what the thermacell emits to keep the bugs away
anyone?

I am sure what is in the Thermacell is not very good for you to breathe in but way better than mosquitoes
I lived in a Baku in the late 90’s and the particular place was terrible with them.

At night they were so bad flying around I could not sleep so I would uncover my feet (as I preferred to scratch my legs than have them bite/fly by my face), spray bug spray liberally in the room and cover my head. It was a terrible 6 month experience with them

And that’s my concern. My neighbor won’t be bothered by mosquitos, but his lungs could very well be bothered by whatever thermacell is putting out.

Maybe I’ll just get this for our own use on our deck.

Again so glad to be away from mosquitoes!

I’ll let someone else analyze the ingredients.

The active ingredient that repels mosquitoes is allethrin. Health hazards of exposure to it in humans are apparently not well-studied, but there are animal studies suggesting it is not a good thing to inhale. Like this one:

Also, a review of its toxicities:

http://extoxnet.orst.edu/pips/allethri.htm

My take on this (and I’m not a toxicologist!) is that occasional use away from food and drink is OK because the pesticide is probably emitted from the device in very tiny quantities resulting in very low exposure to the human users. But please be careful around fish and pets.

When I was a kid in the Houston area we used to chase after the DDT truck to play in the fog :woman_shrugging:. Mosquitos were awful there! 5-6 decades later no ill effects. I’m lucky to live in a climate w/o many mosquitos now.

I never did this but kids in my neighborhood growing up did - who ever thought it wAs ok to allow?!!

We are so lucky to live in a place where bats and birds take care of the buggers.

I have a recommendation that has changed my beach life: https://coolcabanas.com/

Just got it. I need to stay out of sun but love my bay beach. I can carry this cabana myself, and set up and take down by myself also. Better shade, and safer than an umbrella because it can’t blow away because the sand holds it down. It doesn’t take up extra space and doesn’t block the view of others. Game changer for me! I was lucky to get a sale price, and worth it even if I hadn’t.

That’s a nice chair and price!

The price is JUST for the canopy
doesn’t include the chair. But it’s a great canopy!
