Outside Scholarships count?

Will outside scholarships affect how much the university gives you once you’re in college? Like, say I had $20,000 I won from all sorts of scholarships over the years. Will that affect how much I can get in scholarships? And with the noncustodial parent, even their spouse’s money counts too? Even if they both live outta state?

Will outside scholarships affect how much the university gives you once you’re in college?

Yes, Your outside scholarship will firs reduce your self help aid (loans, and workstudy) then it will reduce the school based grants.

Like, say I had $20,000 I won from all sorts of scholarships over the years. Will that affect how much I can get in scholarships?

Cost of attendance - EFC = demonstrated need

if the COA = 45000 -EFC of 20,000 = 25000 demonstrated need

your 20k outside scholarship will first reduce:

stafford loans
work study
Institutional need based aid

It probably will not reduce your EFC

And with the noncustodial parent, even their spouse’s money counts too?
Yes, your non-custodial parent’s money along with their spouses count because your parents are first in line when it comes to paying for your education. Because your parents are married (to other people) their spouses income is considered to the extent that your parent are “benefitting” from the marriage. If 2 people are working some of the expenses are being reduced because there is more income in the household.

Even if they both live outta state?
