Outside Scholarships

I’m a student who has received the highest merit scholarships from Denison (as well as financial aid of course). Are there any other outside scholarships available that Denison students should apply to? I’d love to hear about anything, but particularly local scholarships and ones sponsored by Denison.

Did you check here?

At some colleges outside scholarships may impact the aid you are receiving so be sure to research that aspect.

Ask the writing department. Search your local area too.

Here’s part of Denison’s policy on outside scholarships, so if you are receiving need based aid in addition to merit aid (they are both financial aid) make sure to understand your specific situation as outside scholarships may result in a reduction of Denison financial aid.

Outside Funding Policies

Denison meets 100% of the demonstrated financial need for all of our students. As such, federal regulations require that we take into account these outside funding sources when we are developing financial aid packages to ensure that we are in accordance with the federal and state regulations:

  • a student cannot receive scholarships and other need-based financial aid in excess of their financial need.
  • the combined amount of a student’s aid (if the student receives any institutional, federal, or state aid) cannot exceed their cost of attendance.

Because of these federal and state regulations, outside funding could reduce any Denison grant aid dollar for dollar.

Additionally, it is Denison’s policy to distribute outside funds between fall and spring semesters, unless otherwise explicitly noted in the scholarship award.

Did you apply for need based aid, and didn’t qualify? If you did, Denison meets full need (as they define it). Unless your financial circumstances have changed, it’s my opinion, they are unlikely to increase your aid.

@kelsmom can clarify, but I don’t believe colleges can award additional aid if it’s going to mean you are getting more than the cost to attend (and that includes your parent contribution as they have calculated it to be).

Are you concerned that you won’t be able to afford the cost to attend Denison?

Students who receive federal funding are not allowed to receive aid that exceeds the total cost of attendance. It’s possible to receive aid that covers the parent contribution, assuming that nothing in the financial aid package is based on need (if receiving federal aid, that means that the student was awarded unsubsidized loans only). It sounds like Denison will reduce their own aid if additional scholarships are received. For example, if they awarded a need based grant, it may well end up being reduced by the amount of the outside scholarship. Talk to the financial aid office about your situation.

Yes! I’ve applied to all possible on that list.

I did apply for need based aid, and actually was able to get the amount down to a reasonable amount for me. I have been working for the money I owe them, but I can also add scholarships that cover part of that cost. I’m just looking for ways I could pay for school while still saving money!
