Outstanding at Current School, or Average at Tranfer?

I am a chem major applying for transfer to Georgetown, Virginia, and Vanderbilt from Villanova University. I did very well my first semester (3.94). In high school, I was always the kid who was pretty good at just about everything (a very balanced student, and good enough to get into villanova) but never good enough to get those “best in the class” kind of awards.

but it seems that the more time that I spend here, the more I become that “best in the class” kid. my chem prof invited me to do research with her this summer, i was invited into the honors program, and I was recently invited to the national society of collegiate scholars (although to be honest, im not sure if thats legitimate, or just a load of BS).

i am a chem major, but my end goal is business (MBA). for applying to grad school and jobs, which looks better: an undergrad degree from a grown/uva/vandy where i would (probably) be middle of the pack among them, say a 3.3-6, or a 3.7+ villanova degree with the added accolades?

While i’m a bit biased about transferring to Gtown (i’m also a biochem major), I believe being an outstanding student from Villanova will def look better than any average student anywhere.

However, you can also be an outstanding science student transferring to Gtown as well: I was invited into the Honors program, I was able to choose ANY professor in which I could conduct my honors research (2 semesters) and honors thesis with, I was able to be a research assistant with a prof my first semester as a junior at Gtown, and was even able to be accepted into Gtown’s EMT-B course.

gl and PM me if you plan to transfer to Gtown

What’s your grad school or career goal?

MBA, like to end up in business…

I don’t think there is a substantially better reputation for Gtown/Vandy/UVA than there is for Villanova. I think that an outstanding student at any of those four would be viewed at par. Therefore, I think you should choose a place where you can remain a standout.

Well, why do you think you can’t do just as well at a better school?

There may be many reasons your performance improved (skyrocketed) in college. Don’t question them. Villanova is a great place to be and you don’t need me to tell you how many intelligent students go there. Be proud of the work you’ve done.

That being said, my long-term goal is also and MBA from a top business school. While I don’t think your undergrad institution name OFFICIALLY matters, you might fit in much better at a higher-raked school. So, in short, go for it! Don’t be afraid of the challenges ahead. Should you be so lucky as to make it to, say, Georgetown, keep up your work habit and you’ll do great.

One last thing to say: ask yourself WHY you want to transfer. If you feel that you are a good fit at your current school, are making plenty of friends, and have great relationships with professors, would you really want to leave? If you find a compelling reason, then by all means.

I wish you the best of luck!

anyone else?

I don’t see a reason to transfer, especially if you’re doing so well and are apparently a shining star. Do you hate being at Villanova, that’s the only real question you should be asking yourself.
