ovens

Ah, the joys of an older home…built in the 50s, we purchased it 26 years ago and redid the kitchen and other parts of the house 19 years ago so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised when things start breaking.

Today it’s the oven. Thermador 27" double oven that we’ve loved. Top oven is convection but dh (who cooks more than I) tried it once and didn’t care for it so it’s not been used. The top oven wouldn’t broil yesterday so I had a repair person come today who said the relay board (mother board) and fan for the top oven are fried. He’ll call back with a firm estimate tomorrow but we’re looking at $1200+ to repair and replacement parts will be used/refurbished as they don’t make the parts I have any longer. So, in all likelihood, we’re buying a new oven because that’s just too much $$ to put into a 19 year old appliance.

He recommends Thermador, Wolff, Viking and Miele but said Miele was crazy expensive…I believe my oven 19 years ago was about $2800 so I think all of these are crazy expensive now!

Anyone want to chime in with their experience. Our range is thermador so we’re likely going to lean toward keeping the same but I could be swayed…

Our oven was 27 inch Thermador, too! Loved it until the misfortunate thing happened. Most control panels die because the electronics are not heat resistant. Look for the ovens that dissipate the heat AWAY from the control panels. That was the reason our oven’s panel began to fade (dried capacitor). The capacitor was 50 cents at radio shack, and Mr. had no problem replacing it, but the second time it happened, while the oven was disassembled, the tortie (in my avatar) jumped on it, knocked the control panel on the floor, it cracked, and goodbye the oven. No one made the parts for the 16 yr old appliance. We replaced the double oven with 2 Miele ovens, one steam, one regular oven. They are supposed to have that heat away from the panel design… we shall see. So far, I like the performance, especially the steam function.

At present I am pricing ovens. Would love a Miele but can’t make the price fit into my budget. The heat and control panel problem makes sense. You would think that manufacturers would take care of that during original fabrication of their products.

Check with Garden Web’s appliance forum.

There is a lot of information there. Avoid Wolf. They have had problems with the enamel flaking off on the inside of their double ovens.

Love my Wolff Dual Fuel Range. Could not imagine life before it.

Thanks for the link, @silverlady. Used to spend time on those gardenweb home forums. Haven’t been there in awhile but will go check it out. Dh and I are finally home this weekend so I think Saturday will be purchase day.
