Over 2000 SAT = Accepted into College Park?

I have heard that CP in Maryland are suckers for high SAT regardless of fairly low GPA. A friend of mine got in with a 3.2 and 2100 SAT. So is over 2000 SAT score an automatic in?

I don’t think one anecdotal example can really prove this. Did your friend have exceptional extracurriculars or any type of hook/award that might have helped? According to collegeboard, both academic GPA and standardized test scores fall under “very important” admissions factors and on their admissions website they seem to stress academic performance in high school as a top requirement, so I dunno. I wouldn’t say that 2000+ is automatic in, maybe 2100+. But 2000+ will certainly be enough if the rest of your application is good.

Short answer: no.

If we’re talking anecdotal evidence (which is a weak argument in any sense), I know someone with a 2120 who was waitlisted. So a 2100+ isn’t an automatic in, either.

The Common Data Set shows Class Rigor, scores and GPA are the most important elements considered in admission. https://www.irpa.umd.edu/menus.cfm?action=cds
