Overcoming a bad avg

Heres the story. My GPA is bad, i have a B+ avg from a nationally ranked public high school in NY. My test scores are high, solid. My recs are “best in career” really strong, as is my counsellor rec. My essays are very solid. Ive taken the hardest courseload of any student in my school and my GC made that clear. ive spent five years doing research, ongoing in 3 labs. Published, Westinghouse Semi, a real boat load of experience, member of several highly regarded professional groups, the whole 9 yards. Outside rec is from my professor who is an alumn. I need no financial aid. Is there any possibility that I can overcome my B+ avg, considering the rest of my application, or have I doomed myself?

I have seen kids with your average overcome that stat. Particularly in engineering and tech majors if the grades in math and sciences are high and the courses are advanced in those areas. For the natural sciences at Hopkins, probably not, since that pool of student is so tremendously strong, that there are easily many kids they still have to eliminate with your type of profile AND high grades.

thats not good for me, the field im in is one that is very popular at hopkins (neuroscience) so im geussing i have no shot?

I guess the more important statistic is your rank. Even if your GPA is low, how is your rank? A high rank may make up for the B+ GPA.

we dont rank in my school unfortunately. I am fairly high though unlikely top 10%, not far off but still. is there a prayer? ED?

Your major does make it tough, but Hopkins has traditionally given ED applicants a huge boost. If your SAT1 is very high, that with your research background just might do it, as Hopkins put very heavy weight on research being a research school.

If your close to top 10% (your counselor should have mentioned something like that), you have a chance. ED just makes your acceptance more likely. Most students here do not have all of those wonderful ECs(research!) you mentioned.

Good Luck!

Wow the replies are coming in so quickly, this almost seems like instant messaging.

thanks i appreciate the sliver of hope lol at the risk of sounding arrogant (which im really not) im hoping that what i believe is a unique level of dedication (as i mentioned, 3 labs for several years, even among the really good research kids i’ve met, i feel my CV is very strong) might in some way shine through at a school like JHU. I did my best to show interested, i was there maybe 5-6 times last year, all that stuff so ill just cross my fingers i suppose

any others other words of wisdom? either negative or positive so long as its honest, either from the 2 who already responded or anyone else?

the gpa will definitely hurt, unless you are top decile. But, the Westinghouse and pubs will definitely be a big boost. Good Luck.

hmm well im not an adcom and im not going to act like i know every about admissions, but one thing i do see is that youre focused on ur average so much. i mean when i read ur post, the first sentence is ur average, and all the rest are VERY impressive things…so dont be too worried, theres always other schools, and also dont be so focused on ONE thing, be more positive  thats all i can say im sure it didnt help but i tried :)
